they ran two for us, one at the start and one at the finish, meaning 6 mats in total.

We never required another mat at halfway because it adds to the cost. Perhaps now we need to consider it for future events.

My personal feel is that there are (we hope) only a few ego maniacs and crazies that does this for anything other than fun.  So to chase the cost up logistical issues etc, why waste money.  If these idiots are going to cheat, they'll find a way.  In the end they are only cheating themselves.

If it was me, take that extra funds and try and get full road closure (or a route that can allow for full road closure)

This is singlehandly the biggest crowd puller when it comes to big racing and actually making a $ or two.

If you can get that, your race will grow exponentially.

I think 4 of the 5 riders all confirming that he wasn't part of the group at the finish is all the evidence we need. We gave him an opportunity to present his ride data - with no response, so we assume his silence is admission of guilt. He even had the cheek to ask another rider to prove it.

The fact that he is a known cheat from other races and regions, is further proof.

Turning short is one thing, but claiming prize money, albeit R1100 for 3rd place, is what led us to the decision to impose the ban.

It's a pity that the various cycling unions and associations in South Africa weren't more cohesive. It would have been great to present this guy's previous issues in the Cape and now here in Gauteng and simply get him banned from any organised events in the country. Starting with next weekends 947.

Well done. Does the ban only apply to Carnival City or other races as well?  I would actually love to hear his side of it or his reasoning to justify what he did.

I still try to figure out whether this is stupidity or just plain arrogance....or a cry for help perhaps?

We don't want him at our race, so the ban is only our event. We also don't have any say over the other races - it's up to them to do something or let it happen again.

We asked for his side and never got anything back. Within a few minutes of notifying him of the DQ and ban he replied saying he wasn't given time.

He also asked another rider to show proof that he cheated. Sorry, he needs to prove he didn't cheat. A simple GPX file would have confirmed it - and I can easily tell if it was manipulated.

Oh, and as a result of this, from next year (onwards) we won't be handing out any prize claim forms if the person is not present at prize giving. No taking the form for a friend.

We have everyone's details, so will contact each person by email.

We know people can't always wait for prize giving, but we try our utmost best to get results out in time. We were 10 minutes late on Sunday, which is late - at least most of the guys stayed for prize giving.

I've heard from a reliable source that Gerald is not good with weddings. But give him a race and bachelor party, and he will nail it every time.
