I called "dibs" on a garmin. Then smsed the seller and sent him a whatsapp just to get added to a whatsapp group with 4 other guys and the seller stating that he cant sell it to anyone of us so out of respect we can bid on the item on his group. So BS to his auction and BS to dibs

Auction is he f'ing serious ...dibs,pm sent,I'll take it. All the same thing . Just make contact with the seller asap. Simple as !

I think a bigger problem than dibs is the pm to ask "Dude is it still available?!?" when the add states that if the add is up its available.

Then when you reply to say yeah its available you get the silent treatment.

Bloody tyre kickers...suppose thats part and parcel with dealing in the classifieds and honouring dibs or not.

True story. 1 min after hes ad was posted I replied, sent pm, whatsapp and sms. Heard nothing from him. Couple of hours later I sent another whatsapp. Later that afternoon I got invited to a whatsapp group with 4 other people. The oke says he cant sell it cause he will feel bad as more than one guy is interested, but we can bid on it. I just said im not intersted and left. I was the only one to reply on his ad. Maybe he got a couple of tjommies to try and work the price up

Hope you gave him the appropriate rating.

Dibs won't get you anything from me . (Like in F#koff)

Contacting me personally and making me aware of how serious you are will get you far.

Been holding a brake set for a guy for a month now , I've delt with him before and he has also made A serious effort to help me a while back ...I know he will pay and will patiently wait till the day he can

Some of our bigger corporate clients are also doing this via their procurement software.

And then after the "auction" they had the nerve to contact me to ask me why I did not participate in the bidding?

For real?

Unless you're selling a resource so scarce that you can exploit the situation. But even then I'd get a 3rd party involved to do the dealings as I would never want my name or company's connected to such shitty business practices.

I can understand the opposite happening to minimize procurement costs.

Yes, for real.

So the process is, that the company requests quotes for an item. This they get from 3 suppliers.

The quotes gets checked to make sure all suppliers are quoting on the same spec.

If there are any discrepancies, you are given the opportunity to rectify you quote to reflect apples for apples specification.

One then registers on a website and at auction time, you are shown by number how high you are rated in the auction, 1 being the cheapest and 3 the most expensive.

During the auction window you are given the opportunity to decrease your total quote value by either a percentage or a thousands of rand value.

All this within an hour of "auction ".

This ensures the client gets the best deal, and determines exactly how desperate a supplier is to get business.

Aaaaarg

So a newbie(member for 4days) posts in classifieds item for sale.in 30 min I say I'll take it,in PM and on forum.

No dibs or anything,I'll take it.

In 1 hr ad is deleted wtf.

Newbie has obviously placed ad all over the place probably gum tree and got a offer somewhere else.

On other forums I belong to new members are not allowed to advertise until they've got 50 posts to their names. It prevents people using the hub as gum tree.

My 5 cents

I ALWAYS say - I will take it. Clear and concise. And immediately follow up with a PM (isn't this what the service is for?)

HOWEVER. Twice this year I have committed to a purchase within minutes of the ad placement (5K plus items). Item 1, after numerous messages on PM and whatsap plus two voice messages as the phone was not being answered, I was eventually told the item was sold .

Item 2. A guy in Cape Town committed to the sale. I arranged transport. When he did not respond to bank details requests, he answered my second phone call to tell me some bloke had just collected the bike and paid cash which was convenient for him. Well why did you commit to my sale if not convenient??? Dammit.

It is clear to me that there are two types of traders. Old school like many of us who operate on a nod and a word of honour and commitment. And others (the de-dibbers) .

I have just sold a bike and 3 other items. Bike went to White River, crankset to Paarl, wheelset to Grahamstown and shoes to Parys. Jeez, I felt like Santa's elf last night, all the packing. So what. Commit to the sale, do the work and help and respect your fellow biker.

I feel so much better, I will now get off my soap box.

Lastly. Thank you to all the fabulous (non-dibbing) hubbers out there. You all make it worth the while.

I remember when I sold to you in feb , very to the point and concise communication, I can see how this( ^ Above)  will irritate the **** out of someone like you .
