Bira Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 So ive started training for triathlons with my local triathlon club. I have schedule i follow and due to work/life demands its not always possible for me to put in saddle time. I really like the whole zwift thing and im thinking of getting an indoor trainer i dont want to spend wahoo kicker money and im considering the cycleops fluid 2 or tacx satori. My question is that they are compatible with zwift yet arent really smart trainers as they use no power(correct me if im wrong) therefore i would like to know what the difference between these and your run of the mill sportsmans warehouse ones are? Also are there any othere recommendations? Help would be much appreciated
worriesnot Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 http://www.titaniumgeek.com/cycling/zwift-user-manual-unofficial-running-updates/ Just got into it myself and found this pretty useful as a starters guide.
HdB Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 The Satori Smart is ... semi-smart, in that it can provide the power data back to the app. The biggest advantage of the better non-smart trainers versus a 'run of the mill sportsmans warehouse ones' appears to be that they have a known power curve, so you can use them with Zwift as long as you have the sensors to feed speed/cadence to the app.
Pusher Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 The Zwift website gives you a list of all the trainers that they have a power curve for which includes some of the cheapies. They also explain how it works, syncing with your +Ant device.
gtr1 Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Look at the CycleOps. They had a special on the Powersync. Only R 8k. Is a smart trainer with power.
Mechanick Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Also look at the Tacx Bushido Wireless. Currently on special on chainreaction cyles and you should be able to land the device in SA for about R8400 (including all VAT - it should be duty excempt). Its a smart trainer with power that is generated by the device itself, so no plug needed.
Knersboy Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I had exactly the same dilemma as you a couple of months ago. I bought a satori and I am currently using it with Zwift. The satori measures power and cadence. You need to adjust the resistance manually but between the resistance adjustment setting and your gears you can really simulate climbing steep gradients on zwift and it calculates your virtual speed based on power output and your weight. Zwift really adds another dimension to an indoor trainer. This is the first time I have managed to log 3 hour rides on a trainer. Hope this helps.
Help.Me. Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I have the cycleops fluid 2 and use it with Trainerroad. I have seen a 16% increase in my FTP since using it.(used 6 week training block and say 2 weeks outside rides)I did stick to the plan 80% of the time and did a few outside rides. I have an extra cycleops fluid2 for sal if you are interested. PM me if you are interested.....if i can do it anybody can....
Bub Marley Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Guys I'm also looking to invest in an indoor trainer before March and the summer kicks in. Just to moved to the UAE and will need something indoors when it gets scorching outside. Problem is I need something that's not gonna wake the neighbors. I stay in an apartment now so just a bit worried about noise especially if I do it early mornings. My hub is already freaking loud so don't need the trainer being extra loud as well. Any trainer you can recommend? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Veebee Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Powersync from Cycleops.Best value for money, and not much more than the Fluid2. Buy this, you will be much happier...https://www.bicyclepower.co.za/product/powersync/

Rocket-Boy Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I honestly cant see me replacing my powerbeam with anything other than a cycleops when that day eventually comes. Their support is second to none, there is even a rep on this forum and they are super solid. The big names are all pretty much compatible with all of the apps so it really comes down to price/support/personal preference.

It is also the most expensive though.Any of the direct-drive ones would be a good option - Kickr, Hammer, Flux, Neo, Drivo - they all make less noise than normal trainers, and support both ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth so they will work with all the software that matters. And your loud hub won't matter

Veebee Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I think the kickr snap is a better buy(more third party apps and connectivity options)...just my 2c The cycleops trainers work with Zwift, Trainer Road etc. Not sure of any other apps that 1 would make use off.
