Tyre choice for Epic 2017

Maxxis have however been importing a few new options as of late and I have been considering the new Ardent 2.4 as a front tyre and the new Crossmark II (I think they are 2.35's) as a rear.

This will probably not be a very light combo, but I have strong legs and I'm not racing for podium.

Specialized Ground Control Grid 2.3 in the front and Specialized Fast Track Grid 2.2 or 2.3 in the back - not the lightest but on of the strongest - especially the sidewalls

Spez Purgatory Grid upfront  and Ground Control Grid last year, no punctures. Previous Epic on a Butcher up front and a Fast Track on the rear, one puncture on the Fast Track.

Spez tyres are the best...

Biggest thing to remember regardless of which tyre you choose is:

Its better to have heavy tyres and ride A consistent race and finish strong

Than saving a few grams and plug a hole every 30min and replace tyres everynight.

Especially at the EPIC

( I'm saying you won't get cuts and 'punchers' but A strong tyre will at least give you the best chance )

My tyre choice would have been the Spez Ground Control 2.3 front and the Fast Track Grid 2.3 at the back. The Grid at the front is a bit of overkill for my riding style as I almost never get front flats.

I think in terms of grip it is very similar to the Vittoria Barzo/Saguaro combo although I have never ridden that combo...

Ardent front Ardent race back @1.5bar. Attas, Tankwa and Epic could do no harm to the same set carrying 90kg

So my Aggressor/Minion combo is to much?

Perfect for the Landrover sections... definable go with those in TR/DD format.....

Thanks for the great input! I am quite keen to give the Barzo/Saguaro combo a go. What do you guys think about the width of the front tyre (Barzo)? Is the 2.35 overkill? Or will it be perfect for the rocky and single track sections?

Purgatory and GC are not really XC tyres, are they?

Great tyres but not really suitable for the EPIC or SA hardpack conditions, IMHO.

Currently on Ikon ,Ardent combo .Have used Vittorio saguaro, barzo before and also conti X-king front and back .Conti,s are light and strong ,but leak and i have cut a sidewall or two .Ardent lust in front is a bit heavy ,so is Barzo, but i can live with that .IMO Vittorio combo is the best value currently

Your tyres will be fine, but after day 2 you gonna have to plug the holes in your legs. :D
