Mountain?

Age of rider? Weight of rider? How long been riding? Previous sporting and fitness activities - all play a role.

Which event is it?

My first crack at a mtb of that distance I was happy with anything under 4 hours. Although I had been very fit before injury and slothfulness had made me overweight and unfit. Also my bike was an unsuitable entry level hardtail.

I was not fit and I'm still overweight and did 48km 1100m elevation in 3:30min. That was moving time add 40min for breaks and trying to breathe and not puke. Fishoek - chappies - top of suikerbossie and back. That was a while ago.

Clarens is tough, enjoy first, then chase times later

This ^^^^^^^^^

So many get caught up in racing and getting good times with which they can brag to their friends with who don't even care.

JUST enjoy riding your bike. Trust me finishing with A massive smile on your face is so much better than feeling dead for the next few days because of your massive race effort.

Fitness will come with time , just ride your damn bicycle! ^_^

Welcome to the cycling industry

Slowly slowly catch a monkey,

There will be plenty time to improve personal records, enjoy, learn, improve repeat

As said above, rather finish feeling like a champion than not finish at all, or finish feeling like death

My first mtb race I averaged 12kph. For 23km. If you can average 18kph on a 45km with single track you are going to be top 20% on most races. That is your range to calculate, I reckon.

I am refering to the upcoming Clarens Ashburton MTB race... Which will be my very first race, preparing for my Karoo to Coast entry...

I am 38, weigh 62, been circuit training for the past 7 years. Started MTB in January 2017.

The weekend before I Did a flat 55km in 3:26... Distance was not an issue at all but the elevation is a different story.

Thank you for all the comments, definitly widened my frame of reference!

Even though its just a 45,I just want to prepare mentally as well...
