I gotta say, I can't relate to this as almost all my training is done in the evening or after 7AM on the weekends.

I am not a early morning person.

Some of us are out there before it's morning so you would be fine  :D  :D

2 weekends ago I got to the Cradle before 6am and my Garmin told me it was -5 around Avianto. My head was aching like an ice-cream headache and it was pretty unpleasant. A mate of mine tells me that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad kit and I commuted in the UK for many years in all weather - but in this case I wasn't prepared. I actually looked forward to getting back onto Hendrik Potgieter just to warm up a bit.

So here's a question for the early morning crew..

On the last few morning rides in the Jhb cold I am noticing that I am far off any PB's which is ok, but I am seeing my ave HR go up..

I know there are many variables affiliated to this - time off the bike etc, but overall the pace is slower but the HR is up.

Does anyone understand the effect of cold weather and HR? I have read a few articles on it and there is some evidence that points to a lower ave HR and others that say the opposite..

I do a smidge over 50k in the mornings with a ave pace these days of 27km/h through town (almost the E2E loop but not) this mornings HR was 149, Tues was 152

What stats are you lot picking up?

Maybe you're fighting a bug?

I notice a bit of HR drift depending if I'm under-dressed and cold, or over-dressed and hot. Never thought to tie it down. Must remember to try to do it!

Nope no bug, but did have a major fall at SBR a while with a resulting shoulder injury which I am still nursing.

Just a general observation really. One of the other guys has also noticed a elevated HR as well

The cold does make a difference. We also struggle to keep the pace up. It seems the cold air does not go well with legs and lungs.

I have not compare HR stats between hot and cold days but I do beleive that it would require more effort from you muscles on cold days to warm up and function better.  That is how I see the logic.  Our resident doctors might be able to add to that.

I also noticed here in Europe that on downhill roads I do not get close to the Max speed on hills on warms days.  I suspect first of all your muscles perform better on hotter days and also that the air might be "thinner" on hot days giving less resistence.  Wonder if anybody else have the same experience wrt high speeds on cold and hot days.

Well, cold air has a greater density but a lower viscosity than warm air which can be confusing to resolve; heavier vs thinner etc.

But drag coefficient is proportional, but not linearly, to the ratio of density to viscosity and that ratio at 0 degs C is almost 40% greater than at 50 degs C, to take 2 extreme temperatures. Maybe that explains a non-physiological aspect?

Edit: I neglected to mention that drag force, as distinct from drag coefficient, is directly (linearly) proportional to air density, so cold air, more dense, bigger drag force, as well as the interaction of density and viscosity on drag coefficient.

I can relate about the cold mornings - it seems living here in ZA never quite prepares you for winter regardless of how "moderate" it is considered when contrasted with the Northern Hemisphere.

BTW: My record coldest was -14 (with snow - had to walk some parts) and probably around 3 degrees colder with wind chill. (Netherlands)

Had multiple layers of thermal clothing on - it all kinda stops being a problem when you numb...

You in a different league or insane  :whistling:

Today was the coldest ride for me so far this year. A cold patch registered -1 on the Garmin.

I think the coldest ride that I've done was at -5 but it was in a certain patch.

PTA doesn't have winter (compared to the south of JHB).

^^^^ This completely....does the wind blow anywhere else like it does in Mordor !! But wouldn't change it . Hate the traffic more than the wind.
