Can I just rewind quickly?

So Phil Twatwell did a 4.35 on his Hard Tail.

  • He missed ALL the big jumps
  • ALL of the proper race lines
  • And came in almost 1 1/2 slower than the eventual winning time on a much smoother track.

I also took a long hard look at the podium and he was strangely absent. What a toolbag. Really. If you want to moan at least have the results to back it up.

Also. I'd be willing to bet a fair sum of $ that he'll be throwing whips at Zore this weekend when Crankworks is in Morzine instead of riding the gnar in Champery over the hill.

from what i can see according to the results he came 16th on race day, 9 seconds back - 4 seconds off the podium. that's not bad, obviously on his full rig.

Ja. But it's hardly a result that is worth writing home about if you're the guy calling the track too easy. He should have won if the track was so easy.

Just think what would happen if one of the moto GP guys went out on track on his pit scooter. He'd get his ass fired.

I tend to agree, but I don't care - he's a funny guy (his comments when he was in the hot seat were the best of the day). He's more of a slice of Brit pie type of rider - fools around and has more skills than most of his peers, just needs to focus on speed more.

Dave Trumpore (PinkBike photog legend) had this to say about Herr Atwell in the comment section of one of his photo epics:

"That said, I've spent many years at this track Leogang talking to riders and have a firm grasp of who's just creating drama and who has legitimate concern. Most of the hate for this track is perpetuated on the internet (remember everyone said it was peadally before Gwin won with no chain)... If a rider wants to mock it by riding a hardtail that's their perogotive but that's doesn't mean it's news worthy just because they are looking for attention... There's 10X more guys who like racing here on DH bikes who are many times more relevant and are not just trying to stir the pot..."

And (in response to someone asking why no photo's of his Hardtail run)

"To be honest it was preferred not to give someone whining and complaining the attention they were seeking. Everyone else jumped on their DH bikes and carried on like professionals."

Atwill was 8.5s off Gwin's winning time. It doesn't matter how you cut it, Atwill is a damn fast bloke and cracking a top 20 in the current WC circus takes a hell of a lot.

I enjoyed his poke at the track. Any sport needs it's characters. I'd hate for DH WC racing to become a dry and sanitary affair like what has happened to F1.

Remember. This is a show. Competing with other sports for coverage and sponsorship dollars. If you have a rider dissing the track and implying that it's too easy then he's effectively telling the world not to bother tuning in on Sunday coz. Well. It's a bit lame.

That cheapens the sport.

And. I'd just like to add something. The track did not look lame at all to me. It looked FFFFFFFAAAAAAAAASSSSTTTTT!

I get what you're saying.

I think a lot of guys shared Atwil's opinion, but wouldn't voice it in a public forum fearing backlash from the general public or their team/sponsors.

Watch the latest Spoke Tales edit from the GT team - Sam Dale also mentions in passing that the track is easy/not technical or something along those lines.

Anyhow, Leogang is done. We at least have Crankworx Les Gets to hold us over till Andorra.

I agree, if you want to cheapen the sport with your attention seeking antics, piss with the big boys and lift your leg higher or stfu. No one is going to remember who finished 16th.

We could do without the the disdain certain riders felt towards Leogang's track. Moaning about something being too easy then failing to deliver is juvenile to say the least. So yeah, you make a valid point. Now let me get on to where I contradict myself.

I also believe in giving credit where its due. If you gonna talk ****. Make sure you can back it up right? Riding the course on a hardtail after talking some **** sounds like delivering to me. I mean who here would honestly expect him to race (and/or win) on a hardtail?

He may have opted for the french lines and cased a couple tables for most of the track but he did clear 2 gaps if I'm not mistaken. One of which was surprisingly creative. And some of those drops he took just felt painful.

He might be a knob. But at least he backed it up with that run and if I'm being honest here I think he did it pretty well considering.

Will such antics discourage people from viewing? I don't think so.

I don't watch moto GP at all but I can tell you now that should I hear about some guy's intention to race with his scooter. It will be the first race I would make a point of watching.

Have the Syndicate stopped their highlights program after each race weekend? I can only find episode 1 from Lourdes, no Fort William? Not enough comedic moments without Rat boy and Peaty???

No. They are doing a new format where they don't focus their edits on only the races, but on the wider Syndicate activities. That is why there are bigger breaks between edits.

He didn't prove anything.  I'm pretty sure the top guys could ride Schladming on their hardtails.  They're pro bike racers after all.  But all that matters is the clock on Sunday.  It's a World Cup series.  Diversity in tracks makes for the true all round champion at the end.
