Hi,

 I just finished building my Jeffsy over December.

So far I have had 1 ride on the new bike, I moved from 26" GT Force 1 over to 29er YT.

The first ride was just to get a feel of the 29er and bike set up, but I must say that i was very impressed and loving it so far.

So tried to phone them today,lady told me to phone Roman on his cell didn’t bother to phone a person back.It was the same thing with emails,sent one in December and then in January no response.So clearly YT has gone bang in South Africa and the guys now sit with their fingers up their ass.

As said above as well, there seems to be a stock issue everywhere else but europe.

Perhaps the local guy's hands are tied and can't do much about it.

 

I personally don't like the idea of a direct sales company with local distribution. It defeats the purpose of cutting out middle men and passing those savings onto customers.

So they phoned me back and basically it sounds like YT is done in SA,I was told that none of the 2019 bikes will be coming in and the problem is with YT HQ. To me the writing is on the wall for them here in SA.

Sad their bikes were nicely spec'd and looked nice on the eye.

Well if HQ can't supply other markets, then the backwaters of SA with small quantities will be scrubbed off the list first. 

Or there may have been a genuine breakdown in relationship as well. Who knows? 

 

Being a local distributor for a brand is not all unicorns and rainbows. It needs a lot of kahunas to buy a big stock allotment up front, and if that stock doesn't sell, then you are setting yourself up for a hiding. Kudos to them for trying. Hopefully we'll see a resurgence....

Truthfully it seems better to head to the UK and purchase a new one there with the difference between locally price and Europe price you'd cover the cost of the flight and have some change to spare to take it for a quick spin in the alps.

Hire Car: £12 per day

Throw in cheese, wine, air B&B accom' and you can still come under the price for the same model here. 

 

Then claim VAT @ 20% back at the airport when flying home. 

 

If only it was this easy, and most Saffas would need a visa, so chuck in R2k extra there.  

 

I'm not defending the local pricing at all, but in reality your idea doesn't work.  And if you've ever tried putting a bike on an Easyjet flight, you know it costs more for the bike than the flight.

 

But lets take the Alps idea out for a moment.  If you fly out of Gatwick, there's no VAT back (no reclaim, postage only which never happens ), so now you have Heathrow flights only.  If you choose Emirates by some chance to London City Airport (why the **** would you?  Firstly Emirates, then LCY) then it's so small, they charge for the bikes $150.

 

But even if you go HEathrow with a semi decent priced flight, you will NOT get the VAT back due to it being mail order goods.  You cannot claim the VAT back on these, and even now, certain click-and-collect orders are being rejected (just had it for £1k of lightbulbs I just bought for my house on last week's trip).

 

To save R15k?   All the schlep and time out of office?   I'd rather just buy a Giant and be happy.  Because in reality you maybe saved R5k after visa + hotel + travel + eating.

 

And if you route to CPT International and get that AFrikaans aunty (she LOVES, like F*CKING LOVES!) bike boxes and evoc bags when they go through the green channel.  You are definitely paying.

That was when customs officials only checked out tourists asses. I don't think I'd be so brave now.

 

Another mate had his Jeffsy delivered to his sister in the UK. A few months later he did a business trip there. Picked up the bike and did a little riding in Wales to get acquainted.

Still loving mine. My only complaint is the RIDICULOUS amount of chainslap. The bike sounds like a bag of spanners on rough trail.

 

I so have some self adhesive velcro but I'm lazy so i guess it's my fault.

Jeffsy is the best bike I have ever owned for SA trails.

 

I went about things a little differently though. Matched my XC bike in length, but with a 50mm stem as opposed to a 90mm. Used 170mm cranks. Otherwise in the seated position it feels great. I'm not slung out over a 600m long TT. 

 

The wheelbase is obviously longer as 67 plays 69 degrees and 120mm plays 140mm, but it loves life here.

 

As we spend 85% of our time climbing, I couldn't be happier. Jeffsy makes me want to pop off everything, throw tail off rocks on the flat jeep track, manual rifts, jump gaps and drop to flat.

 

It's great. After a gazillion bikes, this setup and this bike 'works'.

 

I also retro fitted a side entry cage (drilled lower holes) and a 500mm Powerbar dumpy bottle fits below the shock on a small frame.

 

Pre/Post work Tokai spins can be done sans backpack which makes it even better now.

I stole a 500ml (might be 350ml) bottle from my step daughter and am using that with a normal cage. Works great for short rides. I just have to be aware of my water usage and maybe have a few mouthfuls before we head out.

 

I'm super happy with mine. It's the best trail bike (for me) I've ever had. I had a reign before and that was just too close to a DH bike. Great for a gravity guy who can only have one bike but I have a DH bike. I wanted something that i can ride up and still have fun with on the downs.

 

I Upgraded the stock bar to a Renthal fatbar and I'm running ODI Rogue which I have been doing for 10 years. That's all just personal preference stuff tho.

 

I also swapped out the stock 150mm dropper for a 125mm unit coz I'm a short arse. Oh and I have a fake Spez power saddle on there. Switched back to clips 2 rides ago coz I'm apparently doing Sani next year.

Re the water, luckily Tokai has the spring at the bottom of The Bridle path, Table mountain has the river near the tafelberg road gate and Jonkers has 2 or 3 rivers that run all year round. I fill up when I can and plan my rides accordingly.

 

I had a Vitus VRX29, I tried a Reign, I tried a Transition, I tried a Pyga and probably a few others..... None of them felt 'right'. First ride on Jeffsy and it just felt like it was made for or trails.
