Belly fat

That's not true... "for us all, belly fat is the last to go".....

It depends where you carry your fat. I have a flat tummy, but fat legs etc!

Male vs. female. We store fat quite differently to you ladies.

Clearly, the assumption is that all calories are equal. Except they're not. 1g of sugar will make your body react very very differently to 1g fat or 1g protein.

1g of sugar is not equal to 1g of fat or 1g of protein, but you know that already.

1g carbs & 1g protein = 4 kcals

1g fat = 9 kcals.

I think you need to more high intensity full-body strength and muscle building exercises.  Squats, deadlifts, push/pull-ups, kettle bell swings. Things that really get your heart rate up, and work your muscles hard, 2-3 times a week. Cross-fit type stuff. These work outs can be quite short if you go for it.

This builds muscle mass and boosts testosterone, which increases your resting metabolic rate.  Try to work out in the morning as you raise your metabolism for the rest of the day.

The problem with dieting and cardio is it puts your body into starvation mode, reduces your metabolism and testosterone, which triggers your body to store fat when and where it can.

The dietary advice particularly about avoiding sugary stuff is right.

That's my bro' science for the day.

yes, and only one of those has an insulin response. protein itself does not, but after gluconeogenisis, it does. and now guess what hormone is responsible for fat storage? If you guessed insulin, then well done! You've done this before.

so the question is, what are you trying to achieve with diet? it SHOULD be to try and control insulin.

Oh, and if anyone's wondering how heart disease and cholesterol play together, cholesterol in itself is not the danger. It's cholesterol IN THE PRESENCE OF INFLAMMATION. and another pop quiz... where does the inflammation start? If you guessed insulin again, then you're two-for-two...

So to the OP, visceral fat around our organs is super-dangerous. things like fatty-liver are a result of this. This is what people mean when the talk apple vs pear shapes. If you are apple, then worry. think cirrhosis... it's not great. think vascular constriction.

Control insulin as well as improve insulin sensitivity...

Insulin does not act on sugar, it acts on insulin receptors and those can be trained.

High glycemic carbohydrates and saturated fats both worsen insulin sensitivity.

So after many years of no exercise, I took up cycling last year. Since then my legs look a lot better and my weight has come down from 110kg to 90kg. The problem I have is that the flippen fat around the middle just wont budge. My arms are as skinny as they can go, my legs are now basically just muscle and yet my gut still looks like I will take part in the hunger games to get first place at a buffet.

Anyone got advice on how to shift it? Diet is about as threadbare as it can go. I ride as much as I can. Any other exercise I should be doing? (first person to suggest planking gets slapped) Been thinking of trying jogging, but at 1,94m tall, I just look wrong when jogging.

I'm surprised no one has asked you what time you eat supper..... so allow me to be the one

How soon before doo doo time do you eat supper?

Pfffft, less than 1% of the population can claim that (as a result of hypothyroidism or cushing's). The rest are just plain fat.

As good a quote as any to jump into the discussion with .... ^_^

For many many decades I was happy in the knowledge that my genes were that of the Michelin Man - kort en dik .... after all, my whole family looked like that.

And then my sister upended my theory by loosing the excess weight ...

Skip forward past the big "40" .... and I was the steriotypical "boep en bles" .....

And then the stats followed suit and I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.  :nuke:     :nuke:

Had many many sessions with a dietitian.  Finally wrapped my mind around "food", and what works for MY body and MY medical situation .....  Lost a LOT of weight, went from 42'' (TIGHT fit) to a 36'' fitting almost loose.  MOST of that weight loss was as a result of eating correctly.

Only after the initial weight loss did I start to exercise.

Been constant weight wise since late 2016, gradually reducing my body fat percentage.  Down to 17% a few months ago.

THUS :

1) almost everybody CAN loose weight

2) YES - it takes dedication !!  In fact it takes a real and long term life style change.

3) Moderate exercise HELPS.

4) I am of the OPINION that exercise on its own will NOT do the trick ....

5) Final comment - invest a bob in a professional dietitian .... In fact, your medical aid may well pay for this.  For it took a good number of sessions to really UNDERSTAND my options.  I am NOT a carb/portion counter, yet my dietitian gave me ways to practically figure out what, when and how much to eat....
