Hi hubbers.. My son rides a carbon giant xtc with standard pxc wheelset. We want to build him a lighter wheelset with sealed bearing hubs instead of the cup and cone setup. Considering using the Rapide hubs with ztr crest rims.. Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated... And also, are the Rapide hubs as good as their other products.. Have used bars, stem, seatpost and pedals without issues..

They are good. Why not just get Kiwi to use his own rims and spokes and build you a complete wheel set?

This. Good product and service.  You won't be sorry.

Actually wanted to do that but son has his heart set on a set of crest rims for some reason.. They are a tad lighter but as far as i know theyre quite soft. He only weighs in at 45kg so not really an issue.. I kiwis rims are far better priced than the crests...

There is a whole thread on Rapide wheels... check it out.

The Crest thing is just a market issue... everyone has Crests, thus everyone wants Crests.

IMO get something wider. A minimum of 27mm ID so they are future proofed for when he gets bigger and heavier.

There are light rims out there that have decent ID.

Hi everyone. This is posted here because it seemed most appropriate to me...

Just to give both sides of the story - I bought a rear wheel from Rapide last year (2019) when I needed an additional wheel mainly because of their excellent service and value (as experienced by me personally and many others). I haven't used the wheel much until recently because I wasn't using the bike that it was on. However, yesterday after riding the bike again for about 2 months (2 to 3 times a week for between 1 to 2 hours at a time), the axle broke and this resulted in me getting stuck out during an evening ride. I contacted Wayne first thing this morning to see what could be done. Because it is a wear and tear item, he referred me to their website for a replacement axle which, as with most Rapide components, is very reasonably priced. In a nutshell though, there is nothing further that Rapide can do for me from a warranty point of view.

The thing is, I have never had this happen before in forty plus years of riding bicycles (I guess I am just lucky perhaps). Unfortunately for other brands, my previous American Classics were awesome (e.g. light and strong) and gave no problems at all... Wayne has mentioned, in the previous five years, he has had two previous axles break like this. Now however, I am weary to go the Rapide new wheel or repair this wheel route, although I do understand this could happen to other manufacturers, even American Classic.

Thus, this can happen, even to a Rapide product. And, if it does happen, just know that it is a wear and tear item and any repairs will be for your expense (and any resultant frame damage - my chain came off and scratched my new frame which is hard to swallow for me - is my problem too...).

Ciao.

PS. I will post photo's later if anyone is interested in seeing them (large photo's, need editing before posting, limited time now, etc.).

How old was the hub? I'm not sure how an axle can be a wear and tear item. The thing should just last.

Id be interested to see your pics. I have a Rapide Boost rear hub on my enduro bike. Its been hammered in a DH race and an enduro and lots of trail riding in between and I've ridden it about 1000km I'd guess, maybe more. No real issues. Freehub is good just the end caps that need to be tightened up every so often.

Hmm.... snapped axles are usually a warranty item.

I remember Stans had the same issue with their 1st gen 3.30 hubs. The freebody ovalised or the axle snapped/cracked on heaps of them.

I remember they were hella good on the replacement/warranty front.

Hi. The wheel, including all components, was bought new last year, i.e. May 2019. As mentioned, it wasn't really ridden for quite some time except recently (last two months or so for about 2-4 hours a week). I think I may just be unlucky this time because it seems that the Rapide wheels, hubs, etc. are usually bullet proof. And Rapide have made it quite clear that it is something that happens, i.e. it is a wear an tear item, and I can repair it myself if I want to.

Cheers.

Hi. I am not too sure to be honest. I contacted Rapide first thing this morning and as a result of those discussions, I am relaying my particular outcome.

Thanks.

Was it the 12mm Through Axle or the Internal Hub Axle?

I have had a QR skewer snap and a 10mm Cone and Cup Axle snap (on different bikes)

the QR snapped because it was to tight

and the 10mm Cone and cup axle snapped because the QR was to loose

It's bad luck, but broken axles happen. If you'd paid for an expensive hub (Hope, DT Swiss, i(, Chris King) push for a warranty.

At the high quality and low price of the Rapide hubs, just swallow the cost of the new axle and carry on.

I use Rapide's rims and hub on my loan wheels because they're affordable and really durable.
