Staying sane when injured, am I the only one who seems to lose my mind?

I broke my arm 4 weeks ago while training. I was the fittest I have ever been in my life and was on track for the Trans Baviaans. Going along to Baviaans support my team was a very bad idea and rather than motivating me to try again next year I feel like I will never have the energy levels to train again.

Maybe an IDT would help? its going to be a while before I can get back onto the road/mountain. Getting to gym requires an uber or a lift and I feel pretty useless when i am there so I have been avoiding it. I could try running but I really suck at it and generally just end up injuring myself.

What do you guys do to keep your motivation and spirits up when injured? I seem to be slumping into a bit of depression and would like to try anything to prevent it.

Zwift

Been  thinking about this but find it all slightly confusing.  Is there an idiots guide to Zwift anywhere, i have read most of the threads on BikeHub.

My understanding of the minimum requirements: ADSL, smart phone and trainer.

Would this trainer be okay? https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/159623-jetblack-whisper-drive/ it's on special at CWC for R6300 if I buy the speed sensor as well, or should I get a full smart trainer?

I feel your pain.

I broke my collar bone some time back. At the time I was just getting fit again.

I just stayed off as it was rather painful.

Eventually I went to the gym and used the spinning bike. Getting onto the spinning bike was a bit of a challenge because I needed both arms. Once on the spinning bike I was ok.

In reality your only option is indoor training.

Whether on a IDT, spinning bike, WattBike.

All the best with  the recovery

When I was injured, the only thing that could keep me slightly motivated to train on the indoor trainer, was to put on this video...

and then try set goals, like...maintain x watts for the length of chappies / suikerbossie etc. then recover, and then do it again for next climb.

Indoor trainer and spin like a hamster

While on it it's mind numbingly boring, but you get off after a 45 min session and there is a sense of accomplishment - hard to describe but it's there.

Enough to motivate the next session, and so you keep going

I go insane when can't train, so just shift training to a manner that doesn't affect the injury- leg injuries- paddle

arm injuries- indoor  trainer...

maybe try things you've been neglecting or new things that you always wanted to try but never got round to. Look at leg strength, core strength, lower body mobility conditioning etc, stuff that doesn't require your broken arm. It will be challenging, but therein is the key to some mental sanity: the feeling of achievement despite the limitations.

ZWIFT ZWIFT ZWIFT ZWIFT!!!!

And get a smart trainer and if possible the type without needing a wheel - Tacx Flux Smart typically.

its an investment you will thank yourself for later.

Nothing better -> can train ANYTIME!!!

What about expanding your training methods? Possibly look into yoga, I always thought that yoga is more stretching than anything else. But damn! I was feeling it for a few days after a hour session

Definitely get yourself on the indoor trainer and watch the Vuelta!

Or listen to Podcasts while on the trainer. My favourites are;

Ask A Cycling Coach Podcast (TrainerRoad),

The Cycling Podcast,

Cycling Tips Podcast

and for a good laugh The Speed Metal Cycling Podcast.

Good luck with your recovery.

I'm 4 and a half weeks post op for a fractured femoral neck sustained at the Garden Route Bike Park in the middle of having a fantastic time on those fantastic trails. Was super fit at the time - did the Knysna MTB and road rides and could have done a third day's racing.

Was prepping for Namaquaquest and Bosman and and and...

No weight bearing for 6-8 weeks. No bending hip more than 90 degrees - no driving.

A test of character! I do an occasional upper body workout with 2 5kg weights but motivation for that is low.  IDT is out of the question. Loads of little physio exercises to keep the quad muscles at least alive.

I'm not going insane but I do have dreams about riding at least 3 nights a week!

This will pass and I look forward to my first ride in a few months
