[Event] Cape Town Cycle Tour 2018

I didn't expect to ride a shortened one in 2015, or stand on the start line last year, expecting it to be cancelled or shortened.

My point of view was, should somehow a worst case scenario occur again, I'd at least have some kind of backup (or in this case, preemptive) plan. Not sure how that is not rational?

okee dokee.

on argus friday in 2015 you most definitely knew it would be shortened

on argus friday in 2018 you could have seen the weather would be excellent

There's always a worst case scenario possible. I'm just interested in what you thought it would be this year. Water protestors, an earthquake or something really dangerous like a Kagiso Rabada wicket celebration?

why would it be any different to having a dude at the front, apart from bravado and misplaced ego?

Is it normal for a lady to outride the bunch up these climbs?

on the subject of weight loss, its amazing how much weight plays a role when coming down a hill.

I'm a hefty 85kg, my dad is a light weight, probably around 60-65kg. I found myself having to brake freewheeling down hill in order for him to stay with me. Even if I let him pass and open a gap and then let the brakes go, it doesnt take long and I'm coming past him again.

We will be checking wheel bearings as soon as we can, but the wheels feel like they spin freely enough.

It really is astounding! The guy I train with is a good 30kg heavier than I am and has his aero position dialled. Head to head he smokes me down a hill, but if I'm in his slip I'll keep up no problem. Light weight also means less inertia meaning we'll feel the positives (slipstreaming) and the negatives (headwind) more severely (I'm no scientist, but this is the conclusion my brain is giving me).

It's just another beautiful thing about cycling, its not dominated by one body type, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses

Well for example, if she was seeded incorrectly due to not having done any seeding races and therefore being stronger than the bunch, then I would say absolutely.

I think you also underestimate how fast some ladies actually are on the climbs  :whistling:

Come on shebeen - why pick on HdB? Just go back on this thread - loads of hubbers were confidently predicting another cancelled event. The reality is that there is no guarantees that the even WILL happen every year.

With a good enough W/kg, then of course... You'll probably find that on the downhill past Llandudno, the heavier guys would have left her behind. Or not... perhaps she was just very good.

personally, it's more important to go faster than yesterday than to go faster than you.

YEAR MEN WOMEN TOTAL % women 2018 20665 5582 26247 21% 2017 wind   2016 22728 6153 28881 21% 2015 24689 7439 32128 23% 2014 24539 6686 31225 21% 2013 24685 6981 31666 22% 2012 23448 6393 29841 21% 2011 22557 6145 28702 21% 2010 22143 5892 28035 21% 2009 20650 4897 25547 19% 2008 22101 6207 28308 22% 2007 22044 6327 28371 22% 2006 21666 5907 27573 21%

this is for finishers, so i would guess that the proportion of finishers on a good day like 2018 would be high.

definitely a drop in numbers this year, but almost positive there will be more back

   I can't help myself.....

You are trolling, right?

But to answer your question, yes if it is someone with outstanding abilities.

Would you stick with someone like Ashleigh Moolman Pasio up those climbs?

To add, Leorine is no ordinary lady cyclist, she will leave most men in her wake up a climb.

Were you one of those left behind?

THIS ^

I dropped many guys Chappies and Suikerbossie in 1H but they caught me again on the downhills.  At 57kg I am not exactly a downhill specialist haha

if by "the bunch" you mean the 10th lettered cat 1 group, then it's probable. Not as probable as a male doing it, due to the concentration of men vs women in the tour itself, but yes. Probable.

Maybe she was the strongest in the group. Maybe she was seeded just outside the requirements for 1i, or was previously an elite rider on her first tour back (I know a few of these ladies, btw, and they'll kick many a man's ass)

Maybe she conserved her energy better than the rest of them in other areas, and decided to attack at those points.

Does the fact that she's a woman matter? No. Of course not. It's not the elite level, or even 1A, for that matter. If it was on the Elite bunch or 1A, then it would be unlikely, as those guys are FLIPPIN strong.

1J though... meh, whatever.

Yes I am, I was super proud om my fiancée laying down the pain on the bunch and had to brag a bit. Sorry Myles I will climb back into my shell again.
