I know of a few members miffed at this weekend being limited in where one can ride. I expect they foresaw and decided to cut back on all the hate...

Durbie dash was not too long ago, and now this...

Perhaps, if there are going to be more and more "events", that 2019 price tag might start looking somewhat steep..? or is that just me? And 2020? touching a grand?

But still, best buy of the year (still) for me, and I will gladly fork out the moola for another year's membership. (here's to hoping we get even more bang for our collective buck i.t.o. new trails in the new year - not "corridors", but trails  )

Well at least we don't have the Epic on our trails this year - now that is a massive moan & groan every time it happens.

I am fairly certain events pay for the "privilege" to ride on our trails and that income would be priced into our annual fees. so less events would probably mean higher membership fees. I also see it as an advertisement for our trails as a large portion of people riding those events would not be members - but you can never please everybody.

The "nanny state" admin style of the FB page - yeah, I miss the earlier days when the club's FB page was almost as lively as the hub with loads of discussions. But I guess that was never going to last with peeps getting sensitive about landowners and sponsors being criticized on social media. Problem is the fights just move to the hub and then everybody gets involved instead of just club members.

Yeha as a complete noob. You get off walk and then check it out and ride...The same thing DH riders do at a DH track. nobody rides everything blind all the time. You gotta learn. But even that as a noob is ridable blind (slowly). Biggest mistake new riders make when tackling a technical trail...seatpost high enough to tickle your nostrils. Just drop the saddle at the top of the trail. Especially when still learning...And for heavens sake, don't learn to ride a bike while clipped in either :P

And 100% skills differ from rider to rider, but deterring people from what is essentially a pretty chilled trail unless you're trying to go as fast as humanly possible by overgrading it is a massive disservice to the community and the overall potential skill level of riders IMO.

And more importantly, deterring people from having fun riding a really cool trail as well.

So after taking my Spaz for a service and a new rear freebody, I will duly be dropping the seat post on Saturday am (keep the crown jewels safe), and go chase some cobras of the cobra.

maybe some of the more skrikkerig can come ride thereafter...but then, one never knows if the snakes have been chased off, or woken up...

That, and the skills park.

fun times ahead

my 2 cents...  there's a better chance of going rubber side up on the welvergenoegd descent than on the cobra.  the cobra is also in a very good condition at the moment.  when you're well into the summer it becomes gnarlier.

Saw the mail this morning.

Before I start, I would have taken this matter to Facebook, but they switched off the commenting, so I guess it would have to be dealt with here. Secondly, I really appreciate the work done by the trail builders and Tygerberg MTB as a whole to give us such great trails to ride and this is in no way meant as an attack on them.

Warning: If you don't feel like reading a rant, stop here. I just think that some of the members of Tygerberg MTB may want some clarity on what is going on with the 2019 fees.

A couple of things to note.

1)  Significant increase per main member for 2019. The table below lists the fees for the last 4 years and next year ( how long I've been a member). Note that in previous years we saw a reasonable increases. This year the club has decided that 18% seems like the right number. I'm not so sure.

Year    Main member     % Increase

2015    R590

2016    R620                           5

2017    R640                           3

2018    R670                           5

2019    R790                          18

2) No spouse membership for 2019. Last year you could pay an additional R440 for your wife or husband if you were a main member yourself. My wife literally went riding a sum total of 3 times last year. We gladly paid the extra R440, and we would have done so again this year, but we won't be paying R790 for her to ride a handful of times. Also I don't have any children, so your family memberships aren't any help to someone in my position.

I would love to hear from a Tygerberg MTB representative to explain the significant increase. Membership fees for my wife and I cost R1110 for 2018. If I were to replicate my 2018 membership for 2019 (i.e. myself + wife) it will cost R1580. That is a whopping 42% increase.

Still a BARGAIN !!!

Sure we ALL got an email inviting us to the AGM .... I dont to club meetings (done my time - and quickly got gatvol of the moaners that never contribute, but always criticize...), and indicated I would sign a proxy if needed.

Let's look at the cost of ONE "fun ride" :

- ooops, hardly any this side of the mountain .... so it is trip to Worcester .... R300 worth of fuel, ignoring tunnel fees.

- Let's work on a very modest R150 entry fee x2 ... R300 for the two of us.

- But we make a day of it, so leave ultra early and start with a Wimpy breakfast .... R250 at least

- you sure are going to drink something ....

- A burger at the venue, or another Wimpy stop on the way back ...

ONE fun ride costs MORE than our annual Tyberberg membership !!

Rather be thankful it was dirt cheap for so many years .... it is still not expensive ....

Thats the rands and cents part of it .....

Now take a step back and look at the HARD WORK that goes into keeping these trails in shape !!!!

YES, I can point out a few spots right now that needs attention .... BUT, I can point out MANY MORE that have been addressed over the last months.  And you must be blind to not see the effort that was put in week after week ...

If you REALLY want to complain .... let's get rid of the free riders .....  If EVERYBODY paid their dues the finances would look better.

And if you REALLY REALLY want to .... attend the next AGM and become part of the solution ... and SEE where the money goes .....

nee wat, nie tyd vir moan gatte nie !!  Nee wat, sê liewer DANKIE vir die mense wat so hard werk dat ons so lekker kan speel ....

Bra. Relax. I told you I appreciate all the work done on the great trails. I also warned you not to read any further if you're not interested in a rant, so wasting your time is totally on you.

I am just Gatvol of every single thing in my life costing a F-load more every day and no one feels the need to explain themselves. How do you you feel about your new Electricity and water levy? Or the price of fuel constantly going up? Or your government bleeding money to corruption and then your income tax and VAT just keeps going up? Don't know about you, but I sure didn't get a 42% pay increase to help offset the increasing cost of living.

Sure I wasn't at the AGM, but that is why I ask the question now. Or will keeping quiet be of more help to change the situation?

So you want to MOAN ... but dont want a sensible reply .... NOTED

At least we do get VALUE for our membership fees.

A number of the other items you mention are "not that easy" to explain the reasoning for the increases ....  :whistling:

please...

"I would love to hear from a Tygerberg MTB representative to explain the significant increase. "

Now:

a) are you a member of the Tygerberg MTB Committee?

and

b) did you explain why the fees went up by such a high percentage?

I will not be renewing. I only ride conties and hoogies anyways. Then its still about 60+km round trip. Not worthwhile anymore.

You could roughly do one day ride per month for the cost of the annual permit, at the current Hooggies day fee.

For many the day option would be cheaper ....

Going to be interesting to see if the day fees now also increase ...

a) NO (as per my previous reply)

b) It is clear from the club email that the increase was "voted in" ... thus discussed and voted for at the meeting.

Will probably be 3 or 4 for the year at this rate. Fuel is duur. Tokai is nearer

You have some seriously nice trails on that side of the boerewors-curtain .... simply LOVE the trails photos from that side ...

going to cost a pretty penny though to do regular trips from Bellville to that side ....

That said ....I am thinking of getting a "trail list" .... much like a bucket list ..... obviously still spend the bulk of my rides close by, but would be nice to experience more .....

Tokai yearly permit is sort of a bargain for now if you 4 guys and club together.

We should all remember that the Tokai permit is not a Tokai permit but a Table Mountain National Park Permit. So Table Mountain, Rhodes Memorial, Signal Hill, Cecelia Forest and Tokai... If you add all that up you get a boatload of trail, a lot of which is single-track and amazing.

And if you get 4 people together .. A yearly permit works out to R320 per person
