If one rides XC in the Alps and Dolomites, the range of 2x becomes necessary.

Those mountains are insane. It is one of the reasons why e-bikes have caught on so well there.

maybe....., maybe not. A smaller chainring gets you to the top and gravity does its thing on the way down. Most of those goat tracks are pretty smooth anyway. The leg killer is the duration of the climbs. Three to four hrs of pedaling uphill hits the legs hard. No gearing range will substitute for proper training before the trip to Europe. How do the southerners say: "ain't no replacement for displacement!"

are you sure that is how they "talk" in Brakpan and Bellville?

Exactly. The Yankee bikes are dropping 2x compatibility like its hot. Ze Germans seem to be holding out a bit, offering new frames with 2x compatibility.

Vell I vish jemand would tell der verdammt Schweizer ???????? about it....

Yoh, these comments here are mild compared to what guys on Pinkbike are slinging around below those Shimano spy shots.

Horses for courses, as people have suggested. My suggestions:

XC Racers: you will get single speed. Only. It's all about the weight afterall. And N1no would still nail it.

DH riders: you will get foot rests. Only. Out of wood (do something for the environment for a change). None of this chain and gears business. You shouldn't be pedallin' anyway.

All others: gearboxes. Then we can stop complaining about wear, maintenance, rotational mass, unsprung weight, ground clearance, etc. If you complain, you get a gearbox made by Land Rover.
