  1. 1. Do you do it?

    • I only text when I am stationary at traffic light, I know it is still illegal but I pay the fine and it has nothing to do with you.

    • I only use my phone when I need the GPS function, yes it illegal but I need to find my destination.

Why do people driving vehicles fitted with Bluetooth connectivity still handle their phones to make calls while driving?

This, a thousand times this.

I can proudly say that I don't touch my phone whilst driving, but only since I've switched to Discovery Insure, before that I used to text at robots/slow traffic. With the advent of "Hey Google" and Bluetooth in the car, there's no real need to be touching the phone.

That does however raise the question of whether you are still distracted even if you're not touching your phone, which to an extent, you are.

It's proven that it's still extremely distracting even if touch free.

Our company has a completely strict policy of not using your phone while driving, which, for a team of salespeople and their management, with demanding clients, can be tough... But I really would feel ridiculously stupid to die while answering a text...

But I also won't pretend that I am perfect, my particular weakness is when navigating somewhere, and when a call comes in I still look at the phone to see if it warrants a pull to the side of the road to return... I'm working on it.

Studies have proven that you are but in and emergency you revert 100% quicker to the job at hand ie DRIVING the car. So you are still distracted (therefor unsafe) Hence I hate taking phone calls even with BT while driving and end up saying Hello and then stopping.

I only use the GPS when the wife is in the car and she can read it out to me .... not sure if this is more dangerous that driving with a blindfold on and with one hand tied behind my back :P

I am very distracted in traffic when a group of nice bikes or bicycles pass, and I am stuck in a cage.... Although I never touch my phone either for texting or calling.

Talking to your phone is infinitely better than trying to type on it. Typing takes 50% of your hands and probably 75% of your attention away from the job they are supposed to be doing... which is navigating 100s of kgs of steel and horsepower along some of the most dangerous roads in the world.

I don't think people do it to feel or look important (IMO). I think that most folks just don't care. The thought process while driving is: "Ag it's not a big deal, I'l just send jeff a quick whatsapp to saying i'm running a bit late..... LOL! look at the Cat meme. Ah man, jeff sends the best memes. Oh, um, what was I supposed to be typing again?"

I get my Mrs to answer my phone if she's in the car with me, could also be dangerous

Got a bluetooth thingy but haven't bothered to connect my phone to it.

Sadly I observe this more and more and it is going to get worse....

We are so attached to our phones nowadays, look around when you stop at a robot in traffic and notice how many people will have quick look at the cellphones while waiting for green (I often caught myself wanting to do the same when my mind drifts for a few seconds...)

And because so many of us do it, it's not even really socially unacceptable

I'm sure the technology exists that would turn off Whattsap, Facebook, Instgram, Tinder etc when a certain speed is reached.

WAZE already do that. you just select the option that you're the passenger, happy days

I only grab my phone at the red light or in slow moving traffic to queue something else on Spotify or snap a quick cheeky deekpeek for the missus.
