Motorists ride closer to you when you're wearing a helmet.

A few weeks ago I was commuting to work for the week.

On the Friday I left home as usual and about 1km down the road I realised I wasn't wearing my helmet.

So I promptly turned back home and got the helmet.

Moral of the story for me is that modern helmets are so freakin comfy I hardly realised not wearing it until I had an itch on my head.

not this crap again.

Wearing a helmet reduces your susceptibility to a traumatic brain injury. FACT.

Wearing a helmet reduces the effects of low and high speed impacts, and disperses forces over a larger footprint, reducing the effects of blunt force trauma. FACT.

Wearing a helmet further protects against sharp objects in the event of a fall. FACT.

Justifying not wearing a helmet by using flawed studies such as this, heavily influenced by the person's own viewpoint and hypotheses is bloody stupid.

I would raise your bloody and see you more choice language.

&^% like that article is indicative of just how bored journalists are

So the professional riders who used to RACE without helmets are were all stupid?

I wonder whether today's formula one drivers would say that about the lack of safety features in the old cars? Bet they would also say it's stupid.

Just because something was allowed in the past, doesn't mean it should be encouraged in the future.

When my 50+ parents started cycling beginning of last year for general fitness, I made them buy helmets, even though they were doing maybe half an hour max a day around the neighbourhood.

When I have kids one day and they learn to ride a bike, it will be with a helmet on. For the slight chance(apparently) that it can save your life, I would wear one.

It's not only about the rights - it's about the attitude. People grow up riding bikes so they understand the car/bike interaction.

Was an experience to see it, guys riding with a frikken big ass painting under the one arm, or the ladies with two kids on the bikes (and not talking about the tandem type

Soos 'n passer....al om sy eie gat.

But I can show you just as much studies that shows riding without a helmet gives you less injuries

Warra warra warra

But in SA....just like stopping at a robot and using a seatbelt.....it is law.

So you do it.

What I found interesting in the article is an impression that if a cyclist is wearing a helmet you can't kill them necessarily if you hit them or cause them to crash so that motorists then become more aggressive, but it looks like know one else thinks this.

Here in Denmark cars and bikes are separated and I'd guess 90% of commuter cyclists don't wear helmet.

I have not seen a single cyclist death reported in 2 years.

!

Unreal!!

Can’t believe the Danes could teach the nino schurter breeding ground how to survive on bicycles

Cycling Deaths here are quite high, 2016 for example:

“Swiss road victims down overall but higher for cyclists

2016 was a better year for motorcyclists. 24 died compared to 43 in 2015. Car deaths remained the same at 75. 50 pedestrians, died in 2016, 14% fewer than in 2015.

While, the number of cycle related deaths (43) dropped by one, the number seriously injured climbed from 838 to 854. In Zurich the number of cycling accidents in 2016 reached 460, an increase of 42% compared to the five year average. According to Road Cross, cyclists were at fault in two thirds of accidents. Cyclists running red lights are common.

The Swiss Federal Roads Office attributes the rise in cycling accidents in the last two years to the rising popularity of electric bikes. Some of these bikes, equipped with pedals and electric motors, can reach speeds of 45 km/h. While deaths involving electric bikes fell from 14 (2015) to 9 (2016), the number of serious accidents climbed 23% in 2016”

I said I hadn't seen any reported but it turns out (after some research) there are a fair number of accidents in Denmark! I haven't seen anything reported in the various Danish feeds I check.

We had 27 cyclist deaths in 2017. Weirdly - 14 of those were in the >65 age category!

175 road deaths in total. That is WAY more than I would have guessed.

Killed   Total 175 4 33 38 49 51 0 Ordinary private car 104 1 23 26 28 26 0 Lorry, total weight over 3.500 kg 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 Bus 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Motor cycle 11 0 2 1 8 0 0 Moped with registration max. speed 45 km p.h. 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 Other mopeds 8 0 3 3 2 0 0 Bicycle 27 2 2 4 5 14 0 Pedestrian 20 1 2 3 3 11 0 Others 2 0 1 0 1 0 0

That table sucked! Here is the info and breakdown if you're curious...

Jis,I read some backwards reasoning behind not wearing a helmet which I wouldn't expect from someone who has cycled amongst cars.
The article in OP's link has a quote to Forbes - an article quoting Forbes is already undermined because Forbes often sensationalises personal opinions with pseudo facts. It takes 1 undermined article to lose credibility.
As for the reasoning behind the findings of the original article- exactly as expected. Would I suggest not wearing a helmet for a few more cars passing further? No thanks. I also wouldn't put treadless tyres on my car just because it is less strain and fuel.
Another comparable example- if I didn't wear gloves for everytime my hand brushed against a tree or rock, my hands would be much more scarred.

Fixed a grammar mistake from typing with predictive text. Thank you Eldron :)

English lesson for the day. It's treadless not threadless :-)

Yes I know modern helmets are comfy, I still like to ride without one, as long as there aren't cars around.

My current modern helmet is still a massive nuisance to wear, but you won't find me on either the roadbike on roads or mtb offroad without it! (even if it was legal!)

What I found interesting in the article is an impression that if a cyclist is wearing a helmet you can't kill them necessarily if you hit them or cause them to crash so that motorists then become more aggressive, but it looks like know one else thinks this.

I don't understand what you're saying here. Would you be able to say it in Afrikaans? Maybe it conveys it differently.

Dr Walker a doctor of psychology does research - seriously how scientific?

I tell you what Darwin will have an effect on you cycling topless.
