The Veganism Thread

Lots of ideas and opinions here. Personally I do eat meat. I do not wish to enter any debates..just wish to introduce and idea myself and an open minded vegan freind of mine discussed recently. We agreed that life should be considered and it is more 'responsible' to rather choose to eat a large animal like a cow who will feed many people than a smaller animal like a chicken that will feed one family for a day. Less lives lost.

This question will get side stepped better than Danie Gerber.

I only like this for the Gerber reference. The man can drink. And side step a bill: allegedly. Ahem, it was in Windhoek in the nineties.

I tried to read the entirety of this thread, but the Danie Gerber reference interrupted me.

If it's been mentioned before I do apologise.

If you are on the fence about vegetarianism/veganism, find an abattoir and park outside for an hour or so and hear the pigs scream or the cattle lowing (Xmas reference there).

It'll change your mind.

It did me, in 1988.

Yes, I'm an old f*****.

Weirdly, in my own way I have arrived at a similar construct. I have stopped lamb, pork, etc and only eat cow and chicken now. But ONLY because I simply cannot eat the stuff my vegan wife does. I have tried but other than a few really yummy dishes, I have failed. Vegan bolognaise and such is just vile.

Yes I know I am not perfect, but I have also seriously cut back on milk and other dairy...

The problem is I keep telling my wife that the big plastic bottles that she gets her supposedly better water in are far more hazardous to other animals and the environment, and the hypocrisy of perfectly fine tap water kick in. In my book, as long as you are reasonably consistent and don't virtue signal like the 'average' (yes, I know) vegan you are making the place better than it was yesterday.

This is why it’s important to be honest about your argument. If you are trying make the world a better place, and take steps across many areas to improve. Like reduce meat consumption, cycle to work, go solar, reduce plastic consumption etc etc. You are going to make a difference.

But to say the only way is Veganism is pretty must the same absolutism Eldi was referring too.

You can’t go vegan and then neglect the other aspects too. Then you are like those people who order upsized BigMac Meals but with a Diet Coke.

I don't really like the fruit with the savoury .. referring to the raisins..which becomes a texture I am not fond of.. and the egg in it [emoji1785]..and that recipe has milk and eggs in it so not Vegan I suppose.[emoji2368]

How about shepherdess pie?

It has some butter and cheese but those are easy enough to swap out for vegan alternatives.

Being a pie it is a bit "brown mushy" but you can sprinkle some colour on before serving.
