Yes lets take it out on the dog that does not know better, let hit the dog because his owner is complete D005. Perfect human logic.

Indeed, put your foot out to get bitten, pay your own medical bills and get no where with the owner or the police. I have a right to defend myself.

i know, thought about this.

so what does one do then? attack the owner, then you'll have the dog after you anyway?

i reckon my stance is, at 5-10m away, at the top of my voice, "PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOG!!!" then slowly pass with a smile and wave

so get mauled by the dog, then wait for owner to pull it off you so you can take the owner on? no... first things first and do what you need to do to keep yourself safe...

The logic clearly escapes you.

You think fluffy is going to hit pause on ripping your calf muscle to shreds so that you can take the fight to his owner.

Come back when you've been attacked by a dog and share your experience. Your virtuous stance is not going to change anyone's mind on what is a terrifying and traumatic experience.

I am not saying dont defend yourself against the dog. But there is defend, put your bike between you and dog and then there is "defend" kicking the dog or hitting it etc....

just using a water bottle works 90% of the time...

I have and I did not "take out " the dog. I put my bike between us and dog could not get to me.

If it such and dangerous attacking dog, you dont stand much chance of "hurting" it enough anyway...your kicking and shouting will just excite the dog more and it will do more damage......

I'm going to struggle.... I ride with a Hyrdation pack.... but on the plus side I'd probably confuse the phuck out of Fluffy with me trying to "squirt" him away with my nozzle aimed at him or fer.

I will assure you I will win against the dog. I will take whatever action is needed to stop it from attacking me.

Yes you do that, it is clearly the dogs fault not the owner at all.

Edit: i always saw you as someone with logic.....

I will take it out on the dog. The owner can pick up the vet bill for his stupidity.

Ok then. So when another kid bites or hits your kid at school you will also "take out the kid" and hte teacher or the parrents.....cause the 3 year SHOULD konw better......

Fantastic logic. But off you go!

You're right I think.  I must say that in my many years of green belt riding I have only been bitten once and it barely qualifies - a Jack Russel nipped my ankle. Trying to kick the dog hardly ever works and you risk crashing. Most dog owners are quite apologetic if their dog even walks in your way, especially if you slow down and greet the dog as if its your long lost cuzzie.

I understand your love for animals. I love them too. But as mentioned already... do you think I am going to have any joy with the owner of the animal? His vet bills may change his attitude towards his future actions. Logic is one thing. A dog attacking me is something completely different.

If you go to the zoo and somehow a lion bites you. What are you going to do? Try and get away or wait for it to stop and then go to the management and complain? See how logic works.

Try and get away is WAAAYYY Different to "taking the dog out"

My little gift from a German Shepherd a while ago. The doggo got a few swift bites in, but he wasn't able to puncture the skin, except on my kneecap.

A dog has to get a really good grip on you to do some serious damage.

My take is, do what is proportional in the circumstances. Try to avoid the dog. If you're able to, get your bike between you and the dog. If all else fails and it's a big pooch who really wants to tear you a new one, give it a ******** to ward it off. Don't go bezerk on a dog who can't inflict serious harm to you.

Not sure when I was disrespectful to you? Anyway if your kid gets taken out by a dog I hope you have a strong word with the owner of said dog.

I will use enough force to stop / prevent the attack. I will not TAKE OUT THE DOG however.

THEN I will into the owner for sure. I never said DO NOTHING, what I did say there is no reason the "take out the dog" there are many ways to prevent or reduce the agro dog that is attacking.

It seems that people have a lot of anger towards the dog.  When they should have more towards the owner.
