So we got news that Madeleen has indeed make it to Doolhof. Not sure about how long after cut-off time she got there, and still haven't heard from her yet. She'll probably wake up on Wednesday to tell us her story.. To keep going like that after the support vehicles tell her she is scratched just speaks volumes of her character. Ons Paarl se ystervrou!

And Hanno that finished 8th was already back in Paarl Mountain today on a recovery ride [emoji85]

A phrase I've heard often in SA, I'm an import, is...it's not how you start, it's how you finish that counts.

Chapeau to Madeleen.

Rob

I agree, Nico’s TCR has to be one of the most impressive ultra-endurance cycling achievements by a South African ever, especially more so considering that he is a normal guy with a family and a full-time job, and to your point, there was no local recognition whatsoever.

Very true - the only glory in these is for yourself and your small crew of mates, supporters, and fellow riders. Buddy of mine used to video EU events and reckoned the media just cannot grasp events which are not mainstream or done for big prize money or charity.

TCR got a glimmer of well earned recognition this year because it joined the ranks of ultra events where a female ride have won overall. Note though - buddy and fellow Munganite Nico Coetzee got not one iota of media or other recognition in 2018 for being the first ever South African rider to finish a solo TCR.

We have had a few guys feature in the Tour Divide? I'm sure Alex Harris and Moose have put in decent efforts there.

The thing is, unless you actually 'follow' this sort of thing and the race calendar, you don't really know.

With the advent of IG and the 'look at me' syndrome, it is easier to see what the 'big brand' personalities are up to, but as a whole, Saffas do rad stuff with little to no recognition because they aren't in the media and probably don't want to be.

Why do you say classy ? Just asking why, not wanting  to start a whole bunch of negative stuff.

looks like a normal post of his ride and finish ? While polished, it is not classy.

Agreed, and I still have an an issue with the contrived finish. Also disappointed with the fact that Alex allowed this. Cumbaya and all feel good aspects aside, it is bad for the sport. Well that is my opinion.

In the past when I have come to the finish of an endurance event and have been with another for a period of time. You make the call to either gift the position to the opponent, or you take the position.

You do not "share" it is bad for the sport (any sport).

Is there anything Alex could have done about it?
