XTR 12 - 4 years late but sooooo good. I would rather finish a ride than be looking for batteries on the trail that has unclipped and fallen off. And thats from a friend that was doing mechanic at some of the stage races in the last year who left in emergency and drove all night to be back in the morning handing out batteries and burning a few credit cards.

I sold my bike with a xt 1x11 for a scalpel with xtr 1x12 and I'm not impressed at all. The gears don't shift as perfectly as my xt, the old cassette was more compact (11-42) than the 12sp one (11-51 I think), not sure how it's possible that you get one more gear but the gap between gears is so big that the shifting is a bit ***...

Also on one of the bottom gears the derailer is a bit against the lower gear but higher on the cassette it's the opposite, so can't get it 100% perfect...

I Wouldn't recommend changing a flawless xt 11spd for that expensive crap.

At the moment I'd like to go back to my old trusted 1x11 or go for the eagle axs as the axs on my road bike is really nice, the 29 micro ajustments per gear makes it perfect. But I can't justify the price difference between the two ????

If by digital you mean AXS, then yes... that!

Can't speak to the new Shimano stuff. But I run X01 11spd, GX 12spd, and X01 12 spd most recently. The only reason I went mechanical was $, and I kinda wish now I spent the bit extra to get AXS. No mis-shift, no cables, crisp shifting - coune me in when I need to buy my next groupset.

I don't think that one is "better" than the other. Sure one is top of the line (XTR) and the other is second but both are immaculate groupsets! You will get excellent shifting quality from both but only if it is setup 100% correctly otherwise you will always have a strange sound or slow shift.

I really do think that it comes down to personal preference. The Shimano shifts feel way more direct and crisp while the sram feels a bit muffled. Both shift very clean and smooth though.

If you have the $$$ for the AXS stuff I'd definitely look at that, you won't find better shifting quality on a mountain bike.

XX1 = top of the range XC groupo

XO1 = top of the range Trail group

Both "equivalent" to XTR

And I think you are confusing Shimano and Sram. Sram has the crisp click while shifting, while Shimano has the more subdued and arguably smoother shift.

I fitted full XO1 to my bike 4 years ago. I do regular servicing, but have kept the original cassette since the install (done about 25 000km) on it. My shifting was starting to feel off, and there was a noise from the cassette.

Yesterday I fitted a new XO1 cassette and an XX1 chain (under the advice of DnD who says the XX1 chain is superior). Went for a ride this morning - shifting was as crisp as the day I got the bike, and basically the only noise I could hear was my tires on the road.

I cannot emphasis how good XO1 is. If you have money to burn, go AXS, otherwise XO1.

1x12

I should probably have changes the cassette 2000/3000km earlier, but there was no skipping or issues like that. The chain just didn't sit nicely and was making a noise. But since the cassette was old, and the chain was a recycled from an earlier life cycle, I wasn't worried about excessive wear and just carried on abusing it

Everyone is saying AXS but how many run it on a MTB and truly can give advise on it?

XX1 and X01 is good also but I would stay away from axs IMO - I would rather be smiling than the bike shop making a killing selling batteries.

The batteries do not fall off - anyone’s that has is or has a bad mechanic. It’s been tried and tested by top tier racers who often have 2 batteries that both stay on (dropper)

I have it on my mtb and gravel bike - it’s hellishly expensive but it’s unrivaled and it’s not going to fall off, that’s just nonsense

I don't personally own it, I would if I could, but two of my mates do. They both spend 10-15hrs a week on the bike on both Enduro and XC bikes and they have been running AXS for around a year now without any issues whatsoever - definitely no batteries falling off or connection issues.

Which group set is better.....How long is the proverbial ball of string?

Personally I would stick with shimano and mechanical

Currently I have shimano ultegra (yeah yeah roadie) electrical on 2 of my road bikes, they work flawlessly. My mtb 2019 EVO has sram 1 x12 mechanical and there is always some noise from chain rub in certain gears..... the amount of times I have to try adjust it out while riding... snagged this with my lbs when the bike went for its first service and they said (with an embarrassed see you soon again look that it’s been adjusted).

Did I mention my previous mtb’s all had shimano xtr and never suffered this problem (ok they were old school 3x systems)

Based on my current experience I will not ever buy any sram drive chain product if I can help it. Busy saving up for a new shimano XT groupset on my EVO

Sorry for the somewhat anecdotal non electrical x01 or xtr 9100 related comments, however I believe they are related.... same wolf in sheep’s clothing
