Hey hubbers!

Seen a lot of new accounts on insta popping up for these 500 events. Every little town throwing together a "ThisTown500" kind vibe.

We dont like driving that much so are thinking of doing a Southern Suburbs 500.

Are there any particular guidelines or rules for these kind of events.

We have an almost 45km route planned with a bit of climbing in the beginning, then some flat to wrap it up, with a mix of roads, bike paths and a touch of gravel.

Any tips or thoughts?

Yes, the route goes starts and ends at  a Bootlegger so that we can keep fueled up.

Dumbest idea in a while.

When?

No idea what it’s? Can you elaborate?

Cheers

Chris

I also have absolutely no clue.

The only thing I can think of after putting the pieces together is that you ride the same route over and over until you hit 500km on a weekend?

Or 500 people ride the same loop and everyone waits a really long time at bootleggers for their flat white?

I get why small towns do it to try to get families to visit them after a cash strapped 8 months. Initiate travel and remind people what there is out there.

I'm usually all for dumb things like this but I would need convincing.... But first, clarification

The "....500" events a series of 4 events put together by an oke called Rae Trew-Browne. THey are a free entry, no prize series of 500 km unsupported endurance events. The Ceres 500 was the first of the series and did a loop from Ceres across the Karoo to Sutherland, then re-crossed the Karoo back to Ceres. Very different to repeating 10 laps of a 50 km course with a nice refuel at each stop. I did the Ceres 500 and it was a pretty gnarly challenge with up to 200 km between water and fuel stops....

Ha!

Ok, I know Rae. He just did a rad article with Isuzu in the 'Press release' section of the site.

This makes a lot more sense now. Thank you.

Yes, I feel that riding around the peninsula is not quite the same as doing a 500km loop through the karoo.

Much like something like 13 peaks is not the same as a cederberg 120km run.

Any 'endurance' anything where you have an easy 'out' and access to shops and support is somewhat just a long coffee ride/run....

Yeah, thats the idea.

I see there is a Sedgefield 500, a Ceres 500 a Karoo 500 etc.

There will obviously be different strokes for different folks.

In all honesty I do not have the luxury of time to take a day off getting there and back etc. So I thought a one off banger would be lekker that I could do from home.

It definitely is.

I do some big 100km to 150km runs from home where I circumnavigate large parts of the Mountain/Peninsula on the trails. It is really cool training as I can drop down anywhere and find a shop or an Uber if I run out of food or the baby/work start playing up while I'm out.

I'd be more tempted to do 3 x longer loops though as doing 11 loops of the same thing could get tedious, despite the toasted banana breads waiting at bootleggers!

You are never really that far from home between town and cape point.
