Guys,

 

While we have all you wheel and tyre boffins attention...

 

Please tell me how much and how often to top up Stans sealant? (All things being equal)

 

Appreciate all the brains trusts we have at our disposal on The Hub

Usually about every 3 months or so.

2 to 3 Months if you don't have a puncture and air Loss is Minimal.

 

If you have a Puncture or Are Losing air - Immediately -

 

Every Year it is Advisable to Redo the Sealant from Scratch.

 

Tubeless will Tell you if it is "Not Happy"

Thorn Puncture that Does Not Seal. (Redo Sealant and Plug Hole)

More than 5% Air Pressure Loss per Week (Redo Sealant)

Air Pressure Loss During a Ride (Redo Sealant)

R 1 400 for the tires ... could save a bit here, or pay a lot more, depending on what you want.

 

R100 for rim tape

 

R100 for two valves, probably a bit more

 

R150 for sealant, enough for the install with some spare for topping up

 

Thats R 1 750 ...

 

NOT a lot left for labour .... shop is probably making more on the parts than on the labour ....

 

 

And if there are any issues the shop looses money ....

Ahh you're right. I misread the post - thought tires were excluded. Ja fair deal then.

 so a good pump with a gauge is essential

 

how else see if leaking if dont measure

Trying to decide if I should wait until my Kenda tyres are "finished" before upgrading the the Maxxis. How long to tyres last anyway?

Or check your tape and valve 

If the Tape or Valve Seat is Compromised Then Sealant Will Leak Out.

 I usually put a 50ml syringe full into each wheel every 3 months and the take the tyres off and clean out completely every 10 months or so if the tyre isnt shagged already. It takes a bit longer for my wife to wear her tyres down, so hers requires more work  than my singlespeed

Bought my bike towards the end of November 2020 and immediately converted to tubeless with stans sealant. Had to top up around mid April this year, which is about 4.5 months. However, I think I pushed it a bit. The wise thing would be around every 3 months.

 

If you take your wheels off, shake it and listen if you can hear sealant. This will give you an indication as well.

Understanding that the sealant has nowhere to go. When it dries on the inside, apart from the liquid evaporating, the cr@p is still left inside the tyre. It adds weight

In case you dont want to do it yourself... Here's a decent deal considering tyres, sealant, and fitment. And I've enjoyed Vittoria tyres myself...

Think something nobody has as yet mentioned: sometimes you really need a compressor to get the tyres to seat. Some tyres you can get away with a floor pump but others you'll really struggle with unless you have a compressor or at the very least a charger pump.
