Was that really such a great win once it was 2up? WvA did zero turns in the final 3km as IdT was going for time on GC so had to TT the entire run in with a passenger. Differing goals.

Also not completely 'different goals'

Wout said in a post race interview that he could not work with him as he was ordered to protect his team mate's overall position sitting in the second bunch.
So in racing terms with the eye on a stage one, the perfect scenario.
Del Toro could either said "no, I want the stage win" and raced negative or he could race for the GC and put time into his competitors.  Which he did.
I have HUGE respect for him in this regard.  He put head down and raced his heart out!

exactly. The scenario that played out meant WvA was always odds on to win from that finale, so the surprise that there was "surprise".

interestingly IDT is 617 places higher than the next ranked Mexican cyclist. That must be a record for anyone in the top 200

Listening to the commentators, it did not seemed the odds was good for Wout.
He is not in good form at the moment.  He was badly sick the week before the start.  Del Toro is stronger that he is on the steep climb leading up to the line.
So all in all it did not bode well for Wout.

It was never about the Mexican…. If you followed the career progression of WVA, he had his first win in that very place! If you know, you know.🤓👍🏻

Say what? 2nd in DdV, 4th in Flanders and 2nd in DBP... You don't end up on podiums in the Classics if you're not in great form, he was just lacking that final sharpness to stand on the top step 👍

What I was obviously alluding to was that he was not in his previous "I can rip anyone's legs off" type of form.

no he didn't

He was on the *podium at SB, that was the start of many wins. His pro career started right there.
* only winners stand on podiums true fact according to UCI regulations 11.3 section C 🤓

Looking at the T1 splits, Josh Tarling is taking this methinks...

Nevermind, he lost 21s to Hoole between T1 and T2, now behind him. Win is still up for grabs for all of the contenders.
