Pretty much glazed over at the word "value". Bike industry & value don't belong in the same sentence. Marketing, advertising those are the words that go with bike industry. Every new model is 30% stiffer, faster etc. Implies previous model always was a floppy slow clunker. Their best department is marketing.

Hope this is the right thread for this question. Wasn't going to start another one.

Would you buy a second hand DS mtb, that seems to be great value for money, if you know if was raced/used hard with high km's, but also know that it was maintained very well, with good upgrades and a recently fitted drivetrain ?

"Never been raced" is often see in adverts for offroad motorcycles and to me it means nothing. A bike being raced means it has been ridden hard (like they are designed to be ridden), but most racers probably maintain their bikes better than the average weekend warrior. There are obviously exceptions on both sides, but I've raced my bikes and would buy from me long before A LOT of "never been raced" bikes in general.

yes, uh mean it really depends if it's the right bike and the price is right. it is a good deal if you don't need to spend money on it in the next year for stuff that is going to need replacing.

Only concerns would be needing to shell out money for shock/wheel/bb bearings if it's been raced hard in mud. if you can get an idea from the mechanic who maintained it then that will allay a lot of your fears

Have found that the SA suppliers of certain items have lost touch with reality... (False shortages, or valid?)
11sp Shimano 105 groupset, landed in SA from the UK is around half the SA price (Looking at RRP), how is this justified?
Think some companies need to have a look at their pricing models...

Why , people will buy it at that price because it’s like a Werner magnifying glass

The mechanic is the owner.😀

Races done would include Epic, Tankwa Trek, Attakwas etc...

Bike is right, price is "okay".

Frame should have some second owner warranty left. Suspension serviced recently.

Good day. Can you please guide me in the right direction? What is the value of a August 1972 Raleigh chopper mk2? It is original except for tyres and tubes, inner brake cables and seat has been refurbished. IMG_20230919_161706.jpg.6d667541657a72c3ed7704ff7061a95d.jpg

Sounds like you're fishing for a reason not to buy it.

If you've got this far and your bait bucket is getting empty, but there's nothing to take home then go pay the man and get it over with.

I've seen both sides of this coin on cars and bikes. The only way to know is to take it to a mechanic you trust and get them to look it over. We've had some very unhappy sellers leaving here with "like new" second hand bikes that were basically a bag of rusty bolts loosely arranged to look like a bike, and a few others where the buyer got an absolute bargainand didn't even need to replace a chain..

High mileage means nothing if it's been properly looked after.

Cue “mint condition”

It's astounding how few bikes and pieces of equipment are marked as "good" or "fair" condition.

The mind of the seller refuses to accept that whatever they're putting on the market can be anything other than amazing, so it's always "Excellent".

Except when they're buying, then it's just OKish, because they don't want to pay an amazing price.

like starting the heading of you ad off with " Great deal..."

On that, what is 'Urgent Sale'?

I get it if you're in need of cash fast so you sell something well below market value to move it fast, but ads marked 'Urgent Sale' and priced on or above the relevant market price confuse me

Anyway, as you were

Something that boggles my mind.

What is your understanding of the term: "Full Carbon"?

A bike is not "Full Carbon" if the frame alone is carbon. That only makes up around 55-65% of the whole bike.

I'm not full blown Robocop just because I have a metal pin in my arm / leg or wherever 😁

You have to admit it sounds impressive and impactful and makes you want to hand over cash because “full carbon”

I compared a lot of things to last year and everything is skyrocketing, exchange rates, interest rates. Bikes and cars are just on another level, but so long we buy these things the prices will go up. There are also a lot of people with a lot of money that don’t have issue paying R250k on a bike, hence they selling. I ma wait for 5 years and then buy those bikes second hand at a fraction of the price. I received a quote the other day for my drivetrain replacement, I’m still falling off the chair
