don't want to ruin your memories with facts, but pretty sure you didn't get the whole stage back then!

While he still remains in my top5 list of biggest D005E5 to walk the planet, Lance did a good thing here to help when it was needed last year.

what he did was a good thing. why he did it? it's lance armstrong... go figure

it takes an incredibly special person to get it wrong all the time. but still, I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth

Love listening to Friebe on The Cycling Podcast. I have no doubt it is an excellent read and I have been waiting to get my hands on it since they did an episode introducing the book :)

he knows a ridiculous amount about cycling. Track down the audiobook on Audible - one freebie during the trial. It's very well-read. And if you've already done a trial there, use an alt-email for this

'the controversial Lance Armstrong' hahahaha

I know a guy who, as a youngster, did 1 Argus only. His first and last..........at around 3 hours! We talked about the tour and of course times came up! He said his father bought a ticket at a charity auction to ride the tour as the stoker on a tandem.......with Jan Ulrich! He gave  the entry to his son, then around 14 or so, but he never got into cycling. (Never been able to verify the story though, but I hope it is true because it is a good story.)

Jan has only done 3 x Argus

unless he rode with someone else's chip the other times, don't let ballhairs see that!

Did too...

If memory serves, we (South Africa) got better coverage than Europe in general - it actually started before "the flag dropped". It even started before "the ribbon was cut", so you got to watch even the neutral zone...

all of that offset by Phil and Paul's commentary...

I've just finished this masterpiece by Daniel Friebe on Jan Ullrich. If you're a reader and vaguely interested in the pro peloton, give this a shot. Daniel Friebe's writing is fantastic but is eclipsed by his investigative journalism. Oddly, it's his second biography on a subject he never spoke to. Merckx was the other...

Reading it, I feel really sorry for Ullrich. Yes, he didn't do the best things during his career, but man, if someone with half an eye open was looking out for the guy, how might things have been different? Not everyone is rock solid and able to withstand what gets thrown at them, especially when they're the tallest tree catching the wind.

And like Merckx, watching him ride (also like Merckx, doped or not) in a race must have been something else. I wish I'd paid attention... And reading further between the lines, I wonder how things will turn out in time the come for the riders we watch and admire today just like those of old?

Friebe may be happy to know I give this 5 wine glasses 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

I was LA's greatest fan (I have forgiven him now and never miss his Grand Tour podcasts on Wedu.)

The above is merely to justify my cynicism as we have just come out of the fastest Tdf ever, which the commentators tried to justify with "tailwinds" in the 1st week and out and out racing.

I really do suspect there is still some form of doping going on and from what I read it is based on micro dosing so it would be metabolised by morning.....what I read from around 2 years ago is that there are no dope tests at night - maybe someone can confirm that>

I still watch the tour in the belief that any doping is on a smaller scale and most top echelon riders and teams are probably doing it....otherwise I would have nothing to watch!

I like that LA reached out to Jan and he got back on his bike. I hated Jan back in the day being a LA fan but seeing what a nice guy he can be/is just shows how bad being judgemental can be...

Good stories don't not have to be true
