I might still give it one more go - with proper wire beads from Maxxis or Chaoyang.

Try with the ones that come off stock bikes. We can get them here for like R250, decent size Maxxis non-tubeless, brand new.

For the risk of the tyre burping mid corner and leaving one with some roasties or a trip to the hospital it just does not seem worth it. But seeing as the OP is happy to run tyres in the incorrect direction of rotation as well 🤷‍♂️

The burping and crashing myth was one of the main reasons I did this. I can now conclusively call it a myth and I did on one ride lower the pressure to 1.7 bar - no issues.

Fixed that front Rekon when I got home, it is now rotating the right way.

And another Hubber had a different experience in the past and lost some skin.

done this long time (26er times) ago.....

"geto method" (BMX tube cut and stretched over rim. Inflate and cut off tube on sides after inflated. it held air well.

Yes I did crash... tire came off rim while cornering. (my m@er suur geval)

Morel of the story: Just because it inflates, it does not mean it is safe to ride.... 🤷‍♂️

Was just gonna say ... I've done it a few times over the years with no issues BUT

And I mean this with no disrespect, I certainly don't 'shred the gnar' like many I see and admire! I'm a pretty average rider so I don't really test the limits, that's probably why it's worked for me those times

I only found they can sometimes take a little while to seal properly at the bead ... Running 2 bikes with them now, Maxxis Pacer 2.1 on a gravel bike and 700x35 slicks on road rims on a single speed fun bike

I think my fail was down to bad tyres. The cheapie was, well, very cheap and who knows how long it has been hanging from the ceiling of the shop I bought it from. Some time ago I bought a 26er tyre and tube from the same shop and it was so old it would not even fit on the rim - too big - probably stretched out. So that R193 one I ran was just very weak.

The Kenda's while a better make, was still made of nylon and was 13 years old. So not a good choice either.

Might try my luck with Maxxis or Chaoyang in future.
