Look, the husqvarna, triumph and gasser websites are also banned. I am even doing my best to avoid fb marketplace which is even more dangerous because there are series II land rovers on there as well...

Hey Dave.

Like the bicycle - buy the motorbike. I just did for a Triumph 900, very happy. Off FB Marketplace. Got a 2021 with tons of extras second hand. At my age, time and experiences are more valuable than the money in the bank i realised after some perosnal events. At least that is my theory and i am sticking to it.

I rode it back from Montagu via Barrydale down the N2 and then back towards the Franschoek pass in September - it was sublime to say the least. You cant buy that experience.

One of the podcasts I was listening to basically pointed out that after a certain age time left is finite and your enjoyment of the time available in good health is more valuable to you than the assets. And experiences compound. It basically says rather go on the holiday or buy the bike when you are 60 than when you are 80 because you get the compounding and at least you can enjoy the memory . You realise your health is finite and probably wil run out before your wallet, if you have some plans in place.

For me a wake up call was when my brother died recently at 67 after a long struggle with advanced Parkinsons (blessing in disguise) with a sizable chunk of change in the bank. He could have had a much better life if before he got really ill he spent some of his money on enjoying himself. I think i had to take that lesson on board.

Currently drooling over the 1200 Scrambler at the moment which i nealry purchased instead of the Tiger Pro. Always loved the Triumph triple. Katoom have issues with their chocolate cams of late so scared of them.

What happened ot the motorbike thread? You realise we are all addicted to the sensation of being on two wheels so many cyclists enjoy motorbikes.

Ya, in todays climate of aerial bombardment and drone wars, gladiatorial combat is totally unacceptable... I'm thinking Trumpy and Vlad in loincloths in a cage would make good TV though.

A Ferrari cannot be compared to a Colnago bike - the only thing Colnago make are the frame and the rest of the kit on it anyone can buy. The car is bespoke in ways 99.9% of bicycles are not. The car also guarantees you acceleration and cornering speed that most other vehicles can't match while the Colnago will be overtaken on the first twisty downhill by me on my R5k Raleigh 10 speed.

What is cornering speed and luxury FOR in a private use public road car though? My car does all that within the speed limit absolutely fine

A car is a tool, it should be viewed as a tool. Preferably one that becomes less and less necessary.

Combustion engines are also ridiculous and out dated. up to 2000 moving parts vs about 20 in an EVA

More expensive maintenance, more expensive part manufacture, plant use etc. The entire system is old but people cling to it.

You can make jokes all you want, but a luxury sports car is probably one of the biggest waste of money ego greed toys someone can buy.

The same as people in 4x4s to take the dogs walking and do school runs.

People own ridiculous cars with ridiculous engines to drive around town 98% of the time and then whine that Petrol/diesel is too expensive and that there is no space for them on the roads when they ride their bikes.

The back end of global economics (especially the US with dollar held GDP for barrel value/trading) means that men (and some women) will always be sold on big cars, big power and a sense of status and chest puff when their vehicle is big and buff and manly

While we're on the topic of initial price, let's have a quick chat about depreciation.

My 2023 battery-powered machine cost me just under R200k in total, and it has seen 1560km of riding since then (my gravel/road bike does more).

Conservatively, it's cost me R64/km in depreciation alone. This means that an average 17km spin in Tokai costs me R1000 so far. Every time.

You know what? It's utterly ridiculous, but I don't care because this $%^ is what I live for 😄

Whoa! “No licence required” - does that mean it’s road legal or just that it’s not registered? What a ridiculous machine.

"Just not registered" ....

Saw a dude on a brand new Yellow V4Rs with the full TP getup. I’m talking full Mett UAE replica, DMT KRSL shoes, skin suite.. it was a bit of a sight, I passed him and said “kom aan kanpione, kom aan” the oke wast amused. 😂 fq who buys a yellow Colnago!

Back on point. The “cycling” segment locally has become super elitist especially on the road. The base of entry is so high and the industry mostly caters for a very small portion in general. Capitalism always wins friends and we as south africans in general is pretty flashy. Demand = Supply but when the price increases Demand is > then Supply. (Also FU Adam Smith)

These bikes were in a lot of French bike shops in Provence this year. I don’t think this is a uniquely South African thing. I also saw quite a few people on both Y1RS and V4RS too. In Singapore, the amount of S-Works and Dogma Fs on the road is incredible. We’re talking entire pelotons worth more than a block of flats in Seapoint on their way to drink overpriced coffee at 25km/h. It’s a status game and the ticket price is quite high. So best to just watch from sidelines.

What about cheaper items but still expensive if that makes sense….that high end Garmin Fenix 8 pro, the edge 1050, that Woolworths peanut butter.

it’s the same thing. Innit?

I make no bones about the fact I like some high end products, a lush double/triple ply, a nice shaving cream etc.

Hope the 2 ply Quilts is your thing.  Go buy plenty!!!  Best in the market, even vs 3-ply

Yes, I have a vested interest 🙂
