A lot of what KOTAS became is very far from its origins. Where okes rode the same route every morning but never at the same time, so would see each other on leaderboards, but never knew the okes. We knew the first name second name (Pure Savage) on strava caught their eye, when they started adding it in their ride titles. Then Pure Cabbage then La Pure Cabbage etc.

It is what it is, no sweat on this side.

Why should the other teams slow their pace down

You mean Why should they not speed their pace up?

A solution:

  • For "difficult" sections, caught team A captain sits in the front;
  • Simply allows catching team B to roll past;
  • Don't latch onto the last wheel, how tempting it might be;
  • If really necessary, e.g. for a section where D is in the process of rolling past C, and C wants to roll past B/A, the catching teams can speed up ever so slightly.

The grown men opinion is the real problem / solution - Teams actively plan their drafting on other teams strategy ...

Fact is that drafting is a strategy employed up and down the field. If you don’t want to be drafted then stay in single file formation and go faster.

A team could also decide not to draft and stick to a very defined pace but at some point they will be the drafted. It’s what happens when you cram 4000 riders into a 3hr start window

is exactly how we blew up a few okes last year trying to get rid of the milion people who latched on as we came past.

The amount of watts you must increase from just passing to dropping okes drafting you is insane and not sustainable. Last year we did sub 5 and still pulled hundreds of people, it's so easy to go fast in the draft, I actually could witness it myself this year where I blew up completely 150km to go but was still able to finish with our strong guys just by sitting their wheels for 150km doing less than 200w the whole way, to a race time just a handfull of mins slower than last year.

Each to their own.

Although. From 'the outside' it looks like it's devolved into a pod bro club/clique taking themselves way too seriously.
Don't think the vast majority of participants know or care about who the top ten or so teams are, outside of some of the actual pro individuals. Who tend to be lowkey and laid back.

I've done one DC in the past with a regular group of people with no airs or graces, that was exceptional fun and the true spirit of riding bikes. IMHO.
Would definitely be the reason to return for me.

Well unless you got one of these emails: (But hey, maybe some people just got confused)

You are receiving this email because your team is a potential podium finisher in one of the racing categories for Saturday's Old Mutual Wealth Double Century. Please note that in order to be eligible for a prize, ALL riders in your team need to hold a CSA or equivalent international licence. The racing category is subject to UCI rules.  We have confirmed with the CSA officials that a CSA membership will also be acceptable, but you will need to arrange this directly with CSA.  The event will not be handling any licensing, and if you have any questions, you need to direct them to CSA.  Our preliminary check with the commissaires indicates that no teams currently have all 12 riders licensed. All members of teams podiuming on the day will need to provide proof of licence before prizegiving commences.

For teams in podium contention, the “no slipstreaming of other teams” rule will be strictly enforced.  Each category (women’s/mixed/open) has a dedicated commissaire to ensure that all teams in contention for podium places adhere to the rules.  In the event that there is any confusion, the team that has caught another team from the rear has the right to overtake and demand that no one sits their wheel.

For practical purposes we will be lenient in the following areas:
a. Dropped riders who are not with the leading six of the team may slipstream another team but only if that team gives permission.
b. From Montagu through the pass to Ashton (just before the first Team Support Zone) and from Rooibrug to the second Team Support Zone, where the road is narrow and lots of teams (including non-racing) converge, it may not be practical to avoid slipstreaming without slowing down.

100%, it did fly very under the radar for the first 3 or 4 years, it was very cliquey and own joke type of thing that only really effect 24 people. Now I think people just enjoy watching a dumpster fire on the gram, what it felt like in the past 3 years to be honest.

We had a jol this year, okes suffered, already booked for our 2 training camps and DC accom for next year. I just need some ozempic for xmas for those last 4 kg.
