AS I was passing Woodstock MICITI bus station yesterday a saw commuter catching up so I slowed down  hoping to join him and of course he then left me for dead as he raced past.FW de Klerk is hectic after 5.30am with  long distance busses and trucks.Made that mistake once.

 

Looking forward to Hijack alley this afternoon! Fri and Mon we are prime targets.To crown it all it is payday weekend as well .All the crazies will be out tonight and tomorrow am.

Hi, I am currently writing a Thesis on cycling safety in South Africa. Please aid me in my research by filling out a very short 5 question survey. The research is aimed at improving road safety for cyclists and could potentially see a device being produced for cyclists.

Hi Guys, seems like Cpt Citi Council putting a lot of emphasis on trying to resolve Citi traffic congestion, they have a platform where general public can comment on concerns and ideas.

 

Would be great if we can get as much comments as possible towards the safety concerns around the mugging hot spots on the cycling lane ( Woodstock - Paarden Island)

 

Word from the inside is that they are actively looking at this portal on concerns and suggestions.

I commute Century City to Claremont: Century City Train Station, 12th Ave, Old Mutual Train Station, Forrest drive etc. That is clearly an impoverished area known for crime ("The Avenues"), but I haven't read anyone being hijacked on this short cut, am I missing something here?

For me this is one of the greatest little sneaks I have found in the city as it connects the south with the north fairly directly. Anyone have any news for me?

I cycled the same route  the other day and plan to on a more regular basis. Although I do it in the opposite direction - Plumstead to Century City in the morning. It was fairly busy with people walking and just getting to work.

 Yip, pedestrians are the slowest part of my ride. I also hit is morning and evening. Plumstead is a good ride! met a guy that has been doing bellville to Rondebosch for the last 25 years on a bike!

A friend just posted this report and warning on his Facebook wall.  Can the cycle path not be extended to run along the highway on the harbour side?  Many MTB's already using it...

 

"Cyclists beware: Maon Saxe from Sunset Beach's horror cycling experience this morning:

Today while riding on the cycle lane over the bridge at the end of Paarden Eiland, I was mugged! I am fine bar grazes on my elbow.
I knew that particular spot was notorious for muggings and I should have waited for a few riders to ride together with, but I was limited for time and so decided to go ahead solo. This was at about 7.30am. I skirted around two of them but the third knocked me off my bike. They never harmed me after I fell off. My phone fell out and they took it and my bike. Fortunately 3 amazing black guys walking to work heard me screaming and got my bike back but the phone is gone.
Please let fellow cyclist you know, not to be willfully ignorant like me and know that its no longer safe to ride on the cycle lane in that area even with another cyclist. They should wait to form a group and if no one comes go on the highway or try go through the harbour!
Its shocking we have to live in fear and cant use a cycle lane that cost our city millions of rands !"

Again and again and again. Fences left broken, squatters left to squat. Robbers left to rob. City of Cape Town, this 500 m stretch is destroying your 25 km cycle lane. You have to do something definitive about it! Now! Permanently!

Can your friend define "the bridge at the end of Paarden Eiland" ? Is this the bridge next to the N1? Or the bridge over river in Paarden Eiland?

Quite safe just  don't go exploring past 13th avenue. I live in 11th avenue right by the station and I work at Old Mutual so ive been using this route for yeeeaars.
