It you take some time to read the tariff book, of which I pasted a link and a screenshot, you’ll see the rate for each item. Scroll to post #653 and you’ll see the details.

Hi guys. I’ve just imported a bicycle frame. Based on a brief scan of this thread, am I correct in assuming that frames are taxed at 0%?

So if my frame is around R8500, I would just pay 14%vat on that amount?

Just want to have a ballpark figure so I know I’m not getting overcharged.

cheers

VAT is no longer 14%, now 15%. But always bet on VAT+1% *handling etc). So more likely 16% you should look at :)

16% total tax/vat

So expect roughly R9 860.00 for the frame all in

Hahaha. My bad, I’m still technically out the country so clearly not in touch with these things.

My stem cap for the new Cannondale is almost here, when would one pay the import duties, it was only 30 dollars.

You wont pay import duties as there are no duties on parts. But you might pay VAT.

Either when you pick it up at the post office or none at all if the value is so low. Sometimes they slip through without VAT.

Thanks, much appreciated. So even with DHL, you still have to go to the Post office.

no. if it was a dhl option that delivers directly....you should get phoned by dhl for your ID number so they can ad the vat and "handeling" fees. I dont wait for them to phone me...i phone them.

UPS sometimes lets you pay on delivery...but that is totally random i have found. sometimes they want it upfront..sometimes you can do vat and duties on delivery. they guy in the bus has a card machine.

this, and if not then you got lucky and pay no VAT. That happens on the odd occasion too.

DHL Express Customs: 011 923-0398

just tell them you want to provide your ID for an incoming parcel so they can calculate VAT and duties.

they'll ask for the waybill number.

EDIT: they want your ID because SARS limits the amount you can import per year without an import licence.  It is something like R50k/3 packages.

Turns out it was shipped with DHL global and not DHL express, I will have to to go post office to pay the duties.

All it was is

Thought that could have been stuck to a post card and sent to me :P

Even the Post Office got fresh. When your parcel comes in under the duties/VAT radar, they slap you with a minimum charge of R25 odd for "admin/handling costs".

Nothing mahala any longer
