  1. I love the track fork on this bike .... gives it a completely different personality
  2. Apologies if it’s been asked before, but where in Cape Town would be the best shop to try out Triathlon bikes. I’ve never been part of a club, thus don’t have opportunity to test other’s bikes. Looking for compact TT frame bikes as I’ve got long legs .... not In proportion to upper body ito std bike sizing
  3. Yes, it does not sit "lekker" But I'm afraid it happens a lot more than you think .. I generally have specific items I want, I thus get an instant alert when an item becomes available. First thing I do is take a screen shot of the item and the description. Whether the seller maybe changes the price regardless of interest, maybe correcting, or trying a higher price first, or whether from interest ... it happens more than you would imagine. Since comments aren't available anymore it might now be more prevalent .... a quick check will be to ask "Bikehub admin" to run a database query against classifieds' history where the price increased after the initial post?
  4. This post is not aimed at anyone .... there's been a few posts since I wanted to add this. I few years ago I messed up a deal by "bargaining" over the price more than I should have .... a property that won't come around again. . Not long after that I saw this quote: "If you don't get what you want, it's a sign either that you did not seriously want it, or that you tried to bargain over the price. Rudyard Kipling. " I've had dealings with some here where an item becomes available, but when I call the price had gone up. Obviously the seller had a few inquiries and realized he could get more. I then think of Kipling's quote, ... whether my principals override the "want", and if the price is still good. It's not a "feel-good" sale after that ... but we both get what we wanted. Generally I won't rate the seller then .... I just let it go
  5. Question to the wheelbuilders .. I have a Ritchey Vantage 142mm hub which I'm converting back to 135mm, waiting for the conversion axle and caps to arrive but might be another week. But I'm ready to build/lace the wheel now. Wanted to know if the conversion is going to shift the center/dishing? Logic says it should still be centered, and the 135mm will reduce length equally left and right?
  6. Got the Frame back from David. His work is amazing. Brazing is flawless. It's a 2001 Cervelo Prodigy (Nivacrom rear and thermacrom main tubes). New replaced/added headtube to fit a 1 1/8 straight or tapered fork, and rear disc mounts added. He also replaced/added the cable guides. The frame weighs in at 1.7kg after modifications. Now for stripping and painting.
  7. And so it did fail .... not spectacularly ... I went pretty hard, setting the clearance as small as possible between the rim and the magnets, and stood up out the saddle for a few minutes at a time .... about 50 minutes in the tube failed. First time I managed to get a flat on a roller Rim was very hot ... wondering whether I should invest more time into this experiment? ... and whether it will be worth trying a much deeper cheap alu section? I have an old pair of EA50's I can lace. For now I'll go back to my old Racermate Wind Trainer on the roller .....
  8. Thank you, yes, I was concerned about that too. On the 4iiii IDT they recommend having a lower air pressure in the tyre, but you can't lower the pressure too much on a roller. I haven't done more than an hour at a time. Will monitor. Was also thinking that once I have a deeper section rim laced the heat will be better dispersed/dissipated?
  9. I managed to get some magnets, not very strong but good enough for a test project. Most IDT's use magnets internally. I used the brake calipers to attach the magnets glued to a aluminium plate. I can use the brake block adjuster on the brake calipers to quickly vary the distance of the magnets to the rim. Anyway, here's the end result. I'll order some neodymium magnets, and I'll lace another deep section alu rim to my powertap. I love this setup: The Powertap, and cadence sensor allows me to ride Zwift realistically, while the tacx rollers allows the bike to move naturally from side to side, to build core too, and now with added 'silent' resistance, I can use it at night time too.
  10. An added benefit, and I might have mentioned it before, is the fitness developed. The geometry of the gravel bike is close enough to your road bike as opposed to MTB to develop awesome muscle memory. Case in point, by just commuting +- 7500km to the office last year, I managed to get fit enough to do a sub 3 Argus, without any additional training. I put this down to the extra effort required for the heavier bike, commuter bag and wider tires. Once you get onto your ‘road bike’ if feels effortless. Apologies for the scene-less photo
  11. TRP Spyre dual-pull mech disc brakes ... and some Yokozuna cables and housing on the way
  12. Tash Sultana - Jungle
  13. yes, the USD/ZAR together with the additional 15% "regions/countries sales/local taxes" Zwift is charging for some, have now pushed it above R300/month for SA? ref: https://support.zwift.com/en_us/zwift-pricing-update-HygeG0ybH7
  14. It's the one. Looking forward to building it up as my new racer.
  15. I'm sitting with the same scenario. I will receive a modified classic frame back from David Mercer soon. It's a 2001 Cervelo Prodigy. It will need a respray or new colour . I've sprayed frames before, I'm a hobbyist painter (not professional). It is quite difficult to find something, as the classic steel frame tubes are thin in comparison with the new carbon frames, thus what looks good on the new does not necessary look good on our vintage frames. I search google "images" for "custom steel frame paint" etc.. Also have a look at "Zullo" bikes for ideas (https://www.zullo-bike.com/telai-per-bici-da-corsa/pantarei/)

  17. Previously a Colnago was delivered .... Colnago personally delivered the bike to John Paul II at an official event at St Peter’s Basilica in August 1979. Apparently he gave it back later and requested a more comfortable bicycle?
  18. I can understand why its difficult selling at the moment ito COVID-19, no-one wants to spend at the moment, but there’s some other issues too. I’m building a new road bike, and generally use the classifieds for my parts. But now I’m stuck ito which parts to buy. 10 speed cranks are incompatible with 11 (4 vs 5 bolt), wheels is disc vs rims, and thru axle (qr adapter) vs QR, and 10sp freehub vs 11 speed freehub, etc. Shimano and Campagnolo standards have changed so much that you pretty much shoot yourself in the foot buying older components as you can’t upgrade one component at a time … it’s all or nothing, so best is to go with new and forgo the 10sp, rim-brake and non-boost(mtb) etc. bargains?
  19. Lots and lots of hours spent polishing on this bike, well done DJR. But it is not a painful job though, when you are working towards a goal, more a of meditation or introspection exercise .... Many years ago I built up a 57 Karmann Ghia .. spent hours and days polishing but never felt like a chore.
  20. Just received a 'whatsapp' (with no date) about a stabbing and bike taken from at the Steenberg circle this morning, but it's probably the above attack which happened on Saturday, .... with the msg being forwarded? I have not commuted since the start of lockdown, as our staff are all working from home. The frequency of attacks seems to be getting higher? Makes me anxious about getting on the bike again at 5:30am once the office opens up again.
  21. That is beautiful DJR. Love the art work. Minimalistic and inspired! That unique integrated seatpost-seatstay lug is called the "fastback" style I think? Circa 1982/3? Awesome awesome bike
  22. Agree completely. Our divorce started off amicably, but after one round of the lawyers it turned ugly. Next moment a movers truck showed up and took the entire contents of the house. Like James: Lyrics from "The Waterfall": "There's so much stuff in my life, No room for me to growOne day I'm going to break from my life, Due south down to Mexico, I'm going to burn down my house, It's the only way to let it go" This was the 2nd best thing to burning the house down. I went out and bought a new bed, a plate, knife, fork, cup, spoon and kettle. Was the best time ever. No stuffs. Wish it stayed that way .
  23. mmmm .. one of my favourites ... "Land rover - turning owners into mechanics since 1949"
  24. Yes, you are correct, compatibility is an issue on older frames that used 1" steerer tubes, but his Cotic should be able to fit a 1 1/8 straight steerer tube. There is quite a few manufacturer that still produce 1 1/8 straight steerer carbon forks like Ritchey, Soma, Musso etc. Thus it's not a "don't match carbon with steel" issue .... it's just a "can you find 28.6mm straight steerer in SA" (Edit: with the right "external" Cane Creek headset he should be able to fit a tapered too)
  25. "Now I've been told I can't use a carbon fork on a steel bike. Is this a thing?" I would also like to know. There is so many custom steel frame builders that use carbon forks, why would there be an issue with it? I am currently also in the process of building up a gravel steel bike with a carbon fork.
