  1. Yup, you read right. Straight from the horse's mouth "CSA spokesperson Christine Kelly said that clandestine advertising aside, any reference to Facebook or Twitter shows preference for those two social networks, to the exclusion of others." Here is the link Sous en source
  2. No I'm not, the bulk of my income is from photography and on occasion I've shot with Action Photo. Other than print and delivery costs, a digital capture is an expense that needs to be met. Photographer's time, camera equipment, office staff for sorting etc, software, the computers for upload, bandwidth and so on. AND, more often than not, companies like Action Photo have to pay per participant to the organisers in order to shoot the bulk images. No doubt, much of the time the AP stuff could be described as bland, however their market is as mentioned for bulk stuff that the average funrider want's their shot of having been there. Will everyone want it, no. Will it always be good enough, no. However, that is the market they serve and better than most. To use the Cycle Challenge or Argus as an example, there are upto 15000 riders who use those stickers for an image. In order to capture as near as each person, your photography has to be extremely conservative and straight forward. In terms of what Kelvin Trautman, Jon Ivins, Jacques Marais etc shoot, it's a different kettle of fish as they are shooting mainly for high end PR/Editorial/Commercial usage. So the focus is on fewer captures but a higher degree of quality and creativity.
  3. Quite awesome, chap needs some work on the narration though That TRONess brings back some memorys of the big raves and clubs Jokes aside, would be awesome to see more stuff like that here, reflective stuff really is effective for visibility!
  4. Solomons had a bunch of elcheapo winter jackets labelled "Magic" Those things are bloody warm, so much so that I've ended up wearing it off the bike more than on. It's gotta be damn freezing to keep wearing on the bike, within half an hour you're uncomfortably hot and the fit isn't that great. It is what it is though and unbeatable for the price. For a well made product that First Ascent jacket is king, comfortable, well designed and robust. It's cash well spent really, feel that about most of their range. Generally though you should be able to comfortably ride with an undershirt and thermal armwarmers, a buff and/or fleece *beanie muff for the neck and possibly a windbreaker like the FA one, or a cheapie from Mr Price for example. For me the above works because depending on how it warms up during the ride, I can peel some items off and stash them in my pocket easily enough. *Sorry man, forgot to add the link for a 'beanie muff' ... before some thoughts went South for the winter http://www.firstascent.co.za/product-details.php?prodid=805&catid=241&level=3
  5. Damn man, sounds like a good day was had.
  6. May possibly join you guys? Feeling a bit fluey, so wanna see how I am in the am.
  7. A link to The Times article? Cycling isn't the only sports body using the CSA acronym, so it could have been anyone of two or three sports bodys.
  8. Not Fred man, Barry.
  9. HDR 'High Dynamic Range' .... In basic terms, the same shot at a number of frames, each with a different exposure. These are then layered upon one another (like with transparencies) in photoshop or dedicated HDR software, which gives the image a surrealistic exposure or in ponce speak, a high dynamic range across the exposure and tonal range. Hope that helps meneer
  10. Spoke with last week regarding work with the mag, distribution came up. It's definitely a bugbear for Tread and every other publication on similar scale, essentially they're tied down by SAPO and the distributors on getting each issue out and it's a constant fight to resolve. So they are aware and are working on it, unfortunately it's not an easy fix, especially with independent titles in this country.
  11. So show the costing comparisons and pics from the "German crowd" ? Can't see how it's possible to provide a digital capture for less than R50 unless the cost has been subsidised somewhere along the line. Given that receiving a digital image is also the best format, allows one to do however many prints and creations they like. As opposed to paying more for a print.
  12. Nice one, maybe one of the mods can like to make this a sticky?
  13. "Frow fem wif cous sous"
  14. Used it a few times, far as I know it was originally put in for the school there. Gave the one security company a bit of a rev for parking their flippin vans and cars in it, since then I see they no longer use it as parking. Don't know of any other cycle lanes around Jhb though, unless the Spruit counts
  15. Very well done clip, see there's an interview with him in the new issue of Tread as well.
  16. It still contains sealant though, the idea is to aid the sealant by compressing where a puncture occurs. Darn fine idea, would be great to try out.
  17. There will always be them 'thspecial' ones. At least with proper signage theres no excuse though. Given how busy Tokai gets I've always been surprised at the relatively minimal signage in Tokai, some of the best signage I've found, is at Groenkloof. Despite what Eldron said, he was most likely going too fast and blowing his nose out, too notice.
  18. Scalpel design has changed regarding the breakages, instead of the carbon stays being bonded to an alloy frame, it is now a single carbon piece.
  19. One error though, the handling staff would be from Swissport, not SAA. SAA is an airline, not baggage handling. Wether or not the baggage rifling is purely an SAA problem is debatable, I and colleagues had stuff pilfered or baggage tampered with by other airlines. As for Europe, well that system you mention is only active at some airports, like the larger ones on Germany etc... have had issues with tampered luggage including Peli Cases in France, Italy and UK. ACSA and Bidair though need to pull finger with their baggage handling staff!
  20. So the topic title has nothing to do with the "rapture" then?
  21. Ah yeah, MTB Mag. Thieves, plagiarising content from other publications and thinking it's 'ok' since they credit them. Difficult to run comparative bike tests or scoring as the advertisers are actually that sticky about it. Although lately there has actually been some scoring of bikes.
  22. The Fixie article in a recent issue was cool, well written and good photography, same with the current issue's piece on rider's and their bikes. Yeah, sometimes need to re-read his pieces, although maybe thats more to do with my comprehension
  23. Ya noticed that as well, end of the day it's much of muchness and people must just what works for them. Each has their merits, it's upto the individual to look through the hype and decide what best suits them. Kinda like that our scene has such a mix. Unfortunately Mampara is a bit ignorant in his "SA afternoon test" remark though. Although one thing we don't really get to do locally though, is a proper long term test. Mind you, local publications also don't quite have the budgets of many overseas publications, who are more established.
