  1. As far as goals go - "Says Schurter “We’re racing together for the first time and I’m really looking forward to it. Philip is a great guy and a great talent. His experiences on stage races in the South African heat and my experiences in cross-country races will make us super strong. Our goal is to win the race." http://www.treadmtb.co.za/nino-schurter-philip-buys-team-2014-absa-cape-epic/
  2. Maybe you should read Crow's post last year about the rugby players and ex models. They more than meet the criteria and still do work afterwards. Blogs, interviews etc ... There's no such thing as a 'free' entry, theres a commitment to it and a big one. All those media entries have to spend a few hours compiling race reports, footage, blogs, edits etc afterwards.
  3. The whole point and appeal of the Epic is the fact that serious amateurs, semi-pros and joe average get to ride the exact same route as the world's elite riders. Anyone that finishes it deserves their medal. Your description of the Freedom Challenge is also off. Maybe some riders do that, but most don't.
  4. Looks like this is going to an 'Epic' race this year!
  5. Yip, it keeps my coffee table nice and level ... Kidding, it's in a drawer. Insane, what a close call!
  6. Partly incorrect, if your partner bails and you finish inside the time. You still get to continue with a normal number and you get to cross the finish line with an official time and finish. Although you have to start each stage at the back as an 'outcast' with the blue boards. Happened to me in 2012 :/
  7. Try motorbike tyres. Bicycle tyres have a bit more tech in them generally at least. Just picked up a tiny carpenters screw in my back tyre this morning, because my motorbike has tubes (it's a tourer) it cost me 400 odd rondt for a repair at Honda. A new tyre would have been around R1400, conservatively. I feel violated without the happy ending.
  8. Next year's event has been shifted to start a week earlier.
  9. Ja, riding at the top level in a multi stage marathon event over rough terrain like the Epic. Bit of a knock to a competitive advantage to not be riding on a 29r.
  10. Kinda only got entered during the week, fair play to Tim for giving it a go.
  11. Problem here is that you aren't just replacing/repairing a clean area. The braking mounts are right there, so any welding will be a risk. Would recommend any repair be temporary until you can sort out with Felt or find a replacement.
  12. Not really much to plan, even though Max may have been focussed on XCO he wasn't showing real form for Commonwealth Games, even though he was riding very well. He's an absolute power house in marathon and stage races though, besides Kevin Evans he was the only rider staying with Bulls at Sabie. Unfortunately, like Kevin he had punctures. Pairing those two together is arguably the highest level of local talent for marathon/stage racing. May be a bit of a gamble for Epic now, but for the long term it's a formidable combination and I reckon we'll see some exciting racing come Epic.
  13. Assuming she can read .... http://m.canberratimes.com.au/executive-style/fitness/blogs/on-your-bike/youre-a-cyclist-so-its-your-fault-20140205-321np.html "In the road: cars dominate, but often it's cyclists who are blamed for congestion. If you ride a bicycle, sometimes you’ll find that everything is your fault. And I’m not just talking about the situations in which you find yourself while riding a bike. As a cyclist, you can find yourself being held accountable for all the behaviour of anyone who ever rode anywhere on two wheels. The most popular spot for these accusations can be the office. If you’re known as “the cyclist” and someone wants to have a whinge about cycling ... ah yes, here they come, heading your way...... "

  15. From what I've seen, most of them have an internal geared hub on the back.
  16. China, India and Germany. It may have changed more recently though.
  17. Matthew Kimble, now theres a blast from the past. RIP He was absolute blazes in the DH, full lycra style but a complete natural rider. Still got photos somewhere, also with Greg Miller, the Rumblelows, Dirk etc ....
  18. I'm pretty partial to the Turquoise/orange top ... but wif with black shorts.
  19. I think you're just over reacting, v12 was just having a very tongue in cheek go, and the banter was all in good faith. Thought the chirp was funny. Not everything is an argument.
  20. You still need human operators to deploy and set these up, and these are actually expensive. They're great, but ultimately can create more work as you then need editors to go through all the footage, thus increasing expenses. That's without having to recover the capital spend on getting the equipment and extra cameras as well. Plus the risk factor of theft or damage, which in turn increases your insurance costs.

  22. Been working this industry close to 15 years, 10 odd fulltime freelance. It's a topic that's been done to death, and many have covered all the points quite well in their posts already. Someone will always know better though and try to dictate their opinion to you even though they've never actually worked the business of photography. There's two distinct differences though, The snaps of each and every participant who require an image. To do this, your creativity will suffer and thus the 'cover WOW' shot expected. The more tailored, better lit and composed shots, but there's no guarantee of capturing everyone. Yet technology is helping to bridge this gap, but it's still a balancing act. There's a good pool of photographers who get this right; C- Sharp (Lee-Anne) XtreMedia (Zoon, Jacques etc) although they are more media focussed than participant Oakpics Fotograf Jetline-Action Photo of late.
  23. Wait, this sounds near identical to a story posted a few years ago which raised more quesions than answers?
  24. That's the one! ..... Yeah, also been weary of the loctite thing, but there are varying types and strengths. Had one wheelset built a while back and the guy used the stuff, lasted a good few years before being handed down. Still prefer the linseed oil/sealant combo though, personally.
