You asked a question on buying a full suspension and some people used it as an opportunity to attack you.

    It just blows my mind.

    Good luck with your search

The issue was the statement that he was looking at a full sus because he was scammed by a bike shop because it was rusting. Hence the rabbit hole this thread has gone down.

So, I went to look for a new bike at different places. I found nothing until I found a Silverback Stride for only R8999. Without any concerns I bought it. First few weeks go by after a lot of riding, and I see my chain, brake rotors, rims, spokes and derailleur are rusting. I issued a complaint to Solomons cycles and they told me that they couldn’t take responsibility for the bike. Being the only Silverback stride in the store for that price I knew they were lying, and now I’m struggling with a disaster of a bike

I am jumping in on this stage having not read the whole thread yet. But DAMN rusting... That will happen in one week if exposed to the elements and not lubing and maintaining the bike. If I was my bike and don't lube it it shows rust within a few days.

I think the issue is more ignorance than anything else. Not being scammed.
All bikes no matter where you buy them have the same components. The shop is not the issue the owner is.

Also if you are going dual suspension and these are your issues be afraid, be very afraid as you are going to have way more issues and way more costly issues.

To anyone selling the OP a bike please ensure you include a bike maintenance course and get the OP to sign a waiver or you are going to be in deep dodo.

    Uhhmmm ... 😬

This one is a 3x9, maybe 4 or years old.

Ooo well, maybe @Titan Racing Bikes can confirm either way based on this limited information.

Realistically ... these are built to a price point.  Doubt it will have tubeless ready tyres.

Might just go for sealant in tubes to use up these tyres ....

All tires are tubeless ready and even rims that say they are not...... are with a bit of TLC.
I have not yet found an MTB tire or rim that cannot be made tubeless. To be honest some Racing Ralph tires that are Tubeless need a lot of work to make them seal.

  4. Well I did not load the GT on Strava initially, the Crackendal and the Momson are fully recorded. I should not say this but the Momson has a Fox Factory fork that has never been services and these days I am too afraid to touch it as I believe if I open it it will die. No station ware seen yet.
The IDT does not record milage so who knows.
Edit, the Crackendal was 2nd hand when I got it so who knows what it has really done.

I'd LOVE to know the LBS.

You're sure it's not one of those roadside exhaust repairers with the gas bottles and car Ramps?

    Frightening.

I ride Sram Level TLM which were replaced TWICE under warranty. My (no longer) LBS used to answer my question as to why the rear brakes didn't have that bitey feel on the lever like the fronts with "it's due to the longer hose".

I learned from YouTube and bought the Sram Bleeding Edge tool and they now feel identical!

    Good Luck!

    🙂

Why would you want the Bitey feel on a back brake? On the back less is more. It is up front that you need the business.

    OK note Italics/Comic Sans

But really are back brakes that important?

What would be the best bike to use?

I’ve never done this race before.

You could do it on a road bike with wide tires, or Gravel or MTB or Eversions of them; each have their benefits and drawbacks. All depends on what you feel like riding. There are no challenges on the course any more excepts some corrugations and some loose stones.

I'm really happy to receive so many helpful comments! Thank you all! I included most comments, routes you sent me, and further information from the strava heat map and ridewithgps into my new route. In addition, I added some smaller villages and Swartberg pass. I'll also pack some extra water bottles and wider tyres.

My current schedule looks like this:

    13.02.    Start - Botrivier - Napier (140km, 2000hm)
    14.02.    Napier - Breede - Witsand (109km, 1000hm)
    15.02.    Witsand - Stilbaai - Mossel Bay (172km, 1200hm)
    16.02.    Mossel Bay - George - Oudtshoorn (120km, 1500hm)
    17.02.    Oudtshoorn - Swartberg Pass - Calitzdorp (126km, 2500hm)
18.02.    Calitzdorp- Van Wykersdorp - Riversdale (117km, 1700hm, bad surface)
    19.02.    Riversdale - Swellendam - Riviersonderend (167km, 2000hm)
    20.02.    Riviersonderend - Greyton - Start (142km, 1700hm)

..it will be super hard on some days :). Looking forward.

That is going to be such a memorable trip. Damn, if I could I would have loved to join you for a bit. But I am a bit of a blob at the moment and these days are a bit of work.

Note: Botrivier - Napier is a biiiig one. Expect to be fighting the South Easter headwind all the way. Typically it is less windy in the AM and tends to blow a gail in the afternoon. But if it is not blowing, it will be awesome.

Napier - Breede - Witsand and Witsand - Stilbaai - Mossel Bay is also into a headwind most of the afternoon, but it gets better the further SW you go and the winds tend to be more from the SW.

Thereafter you are running with the wind at your back.................... well so they say. I always think there is a headwind haha.

Have a blast and keep us posted.

I didn't know that. He skedaddled from the scene. I have zero sympathy for this oke and believe he should be made an example of.

    https://www.gov.za/faq/justice-and-crime-prevention/what-bail-and-how-does-it-work

Different factors are considered when deciding on the amount of bail. Seriousness of the offence is an important factor together with what the interests of justice permit. Factors such as the likelihood of additional offences being committed once out on bail, the flight risk, opportunity to intimidate witnesses and jeopardizing the trial will all be considered.

The amount is usually determined by the magistrate’s discretion.

    Hi All,

I just bought a road bike and am not sure what routes to use. I would like routes with minimal road traffic. I have Strava and they suggest routes that look good. My question is Strava capable of giving me directions from my phone while riding i.e turn right in 100m etc ect…. Looks like this option is not available in SA?

also wouldn’t mind joining a beginners group. Live in southern suburbs CT.

You can download the route file and load it on your Garmin or other GPS. Not sure about your mobile.

Nice one Gemmers for a good cause. Just a word of caution. When riding in SPCA kit just stay far away from the cut off points

He indicated he will this year. Last year was tight.

  11. I see there are a few people riding to the start these days from Cape Town and the number seems to be growing. I think one or two contenders are also riding the up leg again this year.

  12. Heads Up, The Munga is rolling around again and Tienie (gemmerbal) is riding to raise funds for the SPCA.

If anyone has a few spare ZAR's lying around please try to assist a good cause. https://capespca.co.za/get-involved/team-spca/munga4mutts/

We are going into the silly season and the SPCA are going to looking after forgotten/abandoned pets while the owners go on holiday. So they are going to need all the support they can get.

Also see the recent podcast here.https://www.facebook.com/elton.davids/videos/1051879046011176/?mibextid=YxdKMJ

  13. Never seen the need for more than 2 x 750ml for most events. 2 x 750ml should do 100km with no issues even in 30+deg.

But to each their own. When I did Looong unsupported rides I just added a 3rd bottle cage and that did the job through the karoo in summer.

But the fact that it's two years older, definitely has an impact on resale value/appeal to potential buyers, regardless whether the specs are the same. More wear on everything... two years extra on a bike is the difference between mint, and heavily worn out (especially if ridden often and not maintained well).

Strange, I think this is a bit of a strange way to look at a bike. What the hell does the year matter? I did the 361 this year and got 830km out of a brand new drive train, What good is the year model now?

You are talking about the frame year model. Erm this is the thing that gets the least wear and tear. I would be more interested in the state of the drive train and the fork and shock. To be honest a bike is the sum of its parts. The age of the frame is of no consequence at all.

    Donder the mind boggels....

There is a R85k carbon model in case you missed that detail...
    Supercaliber SL 9.6 – R85 000.00 – Arrival Early October 2023

Top end bikes from many brands have been in R200k territory for a good number of years now.

We should see many of them (Trek and others) on the course in the Glasgow XCC and XCO.
And probably a good few on a trail near you soon.

Edit: Whether R220k or R85k it's a chunk of change, no arguing there. It's just hardly a new phenomenon and always interesting that folks pick out the extreme end of the scale.

I saw that, but how is that any different? Hopefully the foolish rich will also stop paying these stupid prices and pricing will come back to where it should be. But as long as enough people are prepared to pay stupid prices it will continue.

Any way. I have got to sort out two of my staff that have just been held to ransom. At least the protesters don't hold live as very valuable. they managed to get away by paying R3k
