  1. if a race is going to be elitist and exclude people. Then the organizers do not deserve your money. There are far prettier ultra runs in South Africa to tackle that will more than welcome you to the start line...
  2. Nevermind, remembered we have confirmed this before
  3. 1- flat open roads should not be segments, basically the wind will have the decider on most KO(flats)Ms. 2- Honestly I am in the GIS industry and those calculations and the speed of them are still incredible to me. Let alone when you factor in more and more signals. But there are so many variables. One could be on GPS, the other could be on Glonass only or both or Galileo. You could have device settings, device antennae, device direction, interference from metal objects or signal reflectance. The list of things that can interfere goes on and on.... Grand scheme of things it doesn't count because it is a tandem anyway but there is always going to be error and 99% of the time it is an acceptable margin of error.
  4. So if you go look at the top enduro motorbike riders, the real skilled hard enduro ones. The best riders come from a trials background. The skills to ride slow transfer to riding fast. Go spend a day riding trials, you will realise how bad your balance, break and clutch control actually is. I am lucky enough to have one to mess around with and my daughter will be on trials bikes when she is ready. The beauty is that training these slow skills and skills shown in the video don't require lots of space, they are slow and relatively safe so there are no concerns about high speed crashes or over use injuries. But the benefits are massive in terms of bike control, handling and other benefits. The Oset electric trials bikes for kids are raising the next generation of great motorbike riders, I love that these kids are doing it on normal mtb, they will go far in their riding careers.
  5. there is an endless list of gravel and trail gems that are as good, if not better. Ben 10 challenge is a good list to start with. Having driven chappies last year I honestly don't see the attraction, it is just an accident waiting to happen all the time in my personal opinion. Too many "I" specialists(all different road users: runners, cyclists, cars, tourists) using a narrow road with no room for error, half of them trying to find the ideal spot to get a pic for 'the gram' and not focusing on what they doing. I also happen to live on a farm in the platteland so there is literally endless gravel griding from my doorstep with 0 tar, so I am blessed that way.
  6. My suggestion would always be to see if you can get an AXS shifter. Then you can ride a bit and adjust the front chainring as and when you need it. The AXS gives you the time and distance spent in each gear in your drivetrain allowing you to make data based decisions. Soon you will understand what you need for certain situations... For example my 34t chainring needs to be changed for a 36t for shorter rides in and around our area. As below you can see I don't touch granny gear. This was 125km gravel ride on mtb from home so fairly flat. But when it gets a bit more elevation gain and bigger distance(250km) then the 34t is perfect as below:
  7. win all fights by at least 20meters... One thing this thread makes me think though- why bother with road running or riding, stick to gravel, mtb and trail...
  8. the other major one I noticed and again this is more an indoor trainer vs outdoor ride. Was the drop in neck fitness. You often look mostly down and without a helmet on on and IDT. so lift the tv up to get your chin up and put a helmet of not keep those neck muscles strong and working
  9. I think a lot of it is also mind games. I have had a rough 3 weeks on the mtb. But to be fair the current dirt road status in gauteng is either sand or corrugations with a headwind either way. Pushing the watts on the IDT happily but outside feels like a slog and mentally is killing me slowly. I do think that your core does get weaker if you not spending time getting abused on dirt, back, arms, stomach etc. It is all extra energy you don't burn as much on the IDT or a road bike.
  10. back and running consistently after the multiple broken toes followed by a chest infection and tick bite fever. Been a delightful few months... Went under 5min a km for a 12km last week so it is surprisingly ok. For the year ahead I think I am going to dial back to running twice a week and riding most days. Looking at dabbling at a little mtb race from Pmb to Rhodes in June next year so running will take the back seat, will just keep it up for the hike a bikes. it is certainly a million times easier to ride and run with a bit more heat and a bit more light in the mornings
  11. 5wt fork oil is 5wt fork oil as far as I am concerned. Motul and Motorex are both really good oil brands that work with high performance brands.
  12. So our riding with kids journey started on the weekend. We started our 18month old on a Feva seat. boy oh boy what a win, I think we have averaged an hour a day on the bike since then. It has absolutely warmed my heart when my daughter comes through to my office with her helmet on and drags me to the bike. Every time we get back to the house after riding round the farm all you hear is "more, more" and as you ride around she just points her little hand out and she says "there" and off we go that way. Honestly it has been such a special time for me.
  13. we must have similar gait. I get the same wear pattern on almost all running shoes from brushing past the other leg. It gets to a certain point and stops wearing down usually. Won't affect the shoe performance from my personal experience.
  14. Bottom line, put any large group of humans together and someone will be inconvenienced.
  15. One we have been enjoying lately is to use a vpn to an Aussie server and then Channel nine now, which is the Aussie tv channel. You can stream for free. It has a lot of good stuff including "The Block". You can also stream SA vs Aus Rugby there free...
  16. Used Indievelo for the first time the other night. Very workable especially given the lack of costs. A lot quicker to get and keep going than mywhoosh. I am a convert
  17. You can rent wetsuits for the swim. Makes a huge difference, you don't want to be the only one not in a wetsuit. I have done it previously from xterra wetsuits. It was a easy and convenient
  18. big issue for Alzheimer's sufferers... Plenty of commercial products available that do just that.
  19. So I have been in a situation where I (probably foolishly) went to recover stolen goods(cattle) from a farm on the outskirts of an informal settlement. You better go in armed, you better go in with some professionals and you better have the law on your side and the police informed. I had all of the above. 160kg ex bouncer, 9mm on the hip, 12 gauge in the passenger footwell, stock theft unit on speed dial and enroute when we found the cattle. It was tense, it was a very very exhilarating interaction. Scary as hell. We were lucky to have the law on our side, when the perps realized the stock theft unit was on the way and spoke to them on the phone they gave up the animals and even helped us load them with no fight. If it had just been me alone It would have been a 5kop(meer as a 4kop). I had no intention of using my weapon, I kept it concealed the whole time. But I was out numbered and I would have had to really build space to engage and had they been armed with more than pangas it would have been a different story. We got lucky, if the stock theft unit had recovered the animals and we had laid charges the animals would have been kept as evidence during the investigation(not ideal). We also had to prove they were ours with registered brands. Tricky with a bicycle as there is no national database of ownership(natis/registerred brands etc). So you will have to rely on POP and serial numbers kept privately. When recovering if you want to lay charges your bike may be held as evidence. If you go in and don't lay charges you can likely keep it. But you might not have the backup of the law. So it is a rough decision to make. For a bike- let insurance do their thing. For irreplaceable genetic stock that has taken generations to build and create it was be worth it. But each to their own and everyone has their own risk tolerance. As for justice.... another farmer had animals stolen by the same crew, we pointed them in the correct direction and they were not as polite as we were. ( I will leave it at that)
  20. On the positive side. I lawn darted back in 2012. washed out landing on a jump I decided to hit blind, over the bars and head first into the ground... I own my capability to move to my leatt neck brace and will be forever thankful to them.
  21. What is scary is that having ridden in Scotland I found it so pleasant, felt so safe and it was like a dream to cycle around Inverness and the highlands. So I would hate to know how they would find it here.
  22. if I won the lottery I wouldn't say anything, but there would be signs...
  23. I have said it before and I will say it again. It is wealthy cyclists who are buying these bikes at a "steal". Probably people even on this forum buying parts and bikes for a bargain not realising they are stolen. As long as there is a market there will be theft...
  24. I have this exact compressor. It will definitely seat tubeless tyres. I have even seated a few motorbike tyres as well. Check the max pressure your tyre can handle and don't go above it. trust me it is not worth it going over that pressure by accident.
  25. single hook fishing/luggage scale hooked under the front of the saddle works as easily in my experience
