Three things about Kroonstad came to mind. I was born there won’t say how long ago. In the 90ties we used to race the 4 Day Vets tour in the Graskop area . Read hills . Many hills. Then a rider came along from the flat Kroonstad and won the Tour . Can’t remember his name . A hill is just an interval he used to say when asked how he managed that . Thirdly just before one of our many trip to Cape Town from Pretoria to Cape Town for Argus a young cyclist from Kroonstad was killed whilst training on the bypass and the flowers at the spot was a somber moment .

And he came 10th overall

Lots of advice based on personal experience here for the OP to consider..mtb vs gravel bike . From my personal experience living in the Karoo and doing small tours as a rider/ organiser I would say postpone your final decision to closer to race date . One heavy rain storm can change the character and surface of a road in just a few hours . I guided a group 2 weeks ago on a trip that included Uniondale to Knysna , excluding Ou Wapad . The surface of the Prince Alfred Pass down to De Vlucht was super super smooth . Riding it at this moment will need some restraint at the corners so nice it is . Then after De Vlucht the surface is bad with lots of ruts and loose stones and rocks. But who knows what it will look like in September ? Am doing that route again next week and early September. Can give an update then.
