K@K story, at some point leading up to that clip the truck would have passed the cyclist, and he is knowingly crossing over a dedicated cycle lane, he should be checking.

Exactly!

This same thing (except with cars and SUVs and not 18 wheelers) happens to me on a daily basis. Car passes me, then turns, and gets an indignant fright when I lose my sh!t.

Generally, situational awareness of motorists in traffic is limited to what they see in front of them and doesn't extend the 360 degrees around them as it should.

just last week I made that mistake and nearly smoked a commuter. I did stop and beg his forgiveness being such a daft twat and cyclist myself.

*may have passed the cyclist.

Yes, he should be checking, but that's also why I would like blind spot cams on these big rigs. There's an amazing amount of dead space that the drivers literally cannot see. I'm not absolving the driver, I feel sorry for him as it may have been avoidable with teh proper equipment assisting him.

yeah, I'm not extending the same courtesy to cars and SUVs. That's just laziness, as there's not any blind spot that could remotely mirror the one on a big rig.

Nope, there should be no excuse!
