Nope. Math(s) is simply short (slang) for mathematics, so you can use both...

Well yes you can, but that wasn't the point. You can also say gas for the stuff you put in your car, but in SA historically we have never used gas to refer to petrol. That was the point.

Precisely. Math = american english. Maths = traditional (British) english. 

 

We, as a former colony, adopted the Traditional English way of spelling and grammar, and it's important to keep to that standard. 

 

Colour / color

honour / honor

 

and so on. If you move to the states, then use their standard of spelling. As long as you live anywhere BUT the USA, traditional english standards apply.
