Damn. Hope it pulls through. What to do with it afterwards though? Release in any veld area? Totally ignorant on this ...

No idea.. they guy that takes care and rehabilitates the owls is apparently really good and once they are ready to be released I assume he find a spot where it can thrive..

Okay.. it's not a pet.. hubby sent me this pic.. I am not clear on all the details.. but he found it or it was brought to him.. (will find out more when hubby gets home.

Someone shot the owl through the wing and the leg is broken. (last night it seems)

He took the owl to the vet, vet gave him the name of a guy that works with owls and rehabilitates them.. the guy says 50/50 change very of survival, if he can get the owl to eat it stands a better chance if not, there is a problem.

Who the hell would shoot an owl huh?

They are very superstitious. Believes Owls brings death/bad luck. That's why they kill owls.

If it dies, make absolutely sure to bury it, with the help of a sangoma, near the house of the security guard!  :cursing:

My experience is also that raptors with broken wings are often not going to come right. The wing bones are so delicate that they do not heal easily, even with surgical fixes. If they cannot fly, they cannot hunt and that will mean living in captivity for life, which I find (possibly / arguably) even more sad. It is a spotted eagle owl and not endangered.

Shame.. I am hoping for the best for the poor thing, suck a beautiful creature.

And yes captivity is not ideal.

One of the worst things that ever happened to me was having an owl bounce off the windscreen of a van I was driving when I worked at ORT. I felt awful about it for days.
