I have a friend who has a brand new Philips Saeco Xelsis

Long story short, he works for Philips, won the unit and he can't use it as he suffers from migraines.

He's looking for R20k, new is apparently R35k.

Drop me a PM if anyone here is interested.

Are you fixated on the above or open to other suggestions as well?

What type drinks do you mainly drink, espresso or milk based?

At your budget you could get much better imho.

Hi Muzee no not at all. I had a Severin bean to cup machine, but lighting stuffed it up completely....i am in the market for any machine that will give me a good cup of coffee to start with , sometimes an espresso and then a cappucino. So please your suggestions are welcome!

Of the 2, I'm very reluctant to recommend the Breville.

The Silvia is the obvious choice. However look at other options in terms of where to get. Cape Coffees come to mind. Online Coffee Shop as well with great options

Also, never rule out a good/great grinder.

A question that wasn't asked are you happy to go the process of the above machines, or would you prefer the press of button and the coffee is dispensed. ie auto vs semi auto

Those are two very nice, but very different machines. Your choice depends on how you like to make your coffee: Fully manual or slightly automated?

In my mind, it's a bit like choosing and ebike or a normal bike. Both get you to your destination, but perhaps with slightly different levels of effort and overall experience.

I have the Rancilio Silvia and Rocky combo, so am somewhat biased.

My recommendation would be to pass on the PID and rather put that money into a better grinder than your Severin. You can add the PID later, but I think that is only worthwhile if you are making more than 2 coffees at a time. I am not a big fan of grinding into a bin and then scooping the coffee out - straight into the portafilter for me! I stand to be corrected, but that Severin might not be able to get your grind fine enough for the Rancilio - I stand to be corrected.

If you do go the Rancilio way, don't forget a tamping mat, knock box and 2 milk jugs...

I have no experience with the Breville machine, but I have yet to hear of someone complaining about theirs.

As others have mentioned, there are other options and brands but I just focused on your two choices.

That Lelit looks really nice (and compact), but I noticed that it doesn't have a standard 58mm group head. Not a problem, until you are looking for new tampers, baskets or portafilters.

My mate has a Breville that comes with a terrible tamper, so his wife bought a new one which she had engraved (all very sweet), but of course it didn't fit, so they had it ground down to size and polished up again.

Suggestion at your price point - don't go for an automatic machine. The Rancillio is good but single boiler.

If you doing milk based drinks consider a HX (Heat Exchange) machine. Dual boilers will be above your price point (unless you looking for second hand)

Have a look at the Lelit Mara, Nuova Simonelli oscar and other machines as well.

Nice to have features to also look out for is PID, E61 group head, pump type (although rotary pumps might be a bit out of your budget).

Places to look at as a starting point - onlinecoffeeshop, capecoffeebeans, Koldserve, Morrico, Cafe Izzo etc

in time to come seriously consider an upgraded grinder, buy the best you can afford, Look into Niche Zero (if you can source), Eureka Mignon (or the soon to be released eureka single dose grinders), Coffee Essentials Single Dose etc.
