hboli4 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Hey, did you guys see Fontana go outside the pink markers when he hit Kulhavey wheel and went off track, technically he should be disqualified. Hermida should have bronze! Think the automatic DQ only applied when you passed a rider while going outside the markers.
Wyatt Earp Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I must say I find the poll results really interesting.I voted Burry, I was ceretain he could do it and feel we need to support our fellow countrymen.I know the poll was for the win, but not a single vote for Fontana.
Shebeen Posted August 13, 2012 Author Posted August 13, 2012 That was an amazing race to watch. Got the start on SABC2, then halfway through 1st lap they switched to a boxing final between a cuban and a mongolian. By the time i got home burry was back in the bunch(i think we both did some redlining and racy overtaking to get there). Again, every armchair specialist has an opinion. We weren't there, we don't know exactly who felt like what on the day and what happened at the start. I don't think there was much between that top 5 to be honest.Burry had a bad start, for what reasons, none of us will know, I will say that to my eyes he rode the hardest race out of that front 5.totally, my only guess is that he either reacted too slowly or maybe his foot slipped and unclipped at the wrong time. Either way, the start that Burry had was in his own control. He was in the front row and needed to make it count, he will be kicking himself(to death) about it. The fact that he had the legs and vasbyt to get back to the front and actually play a part in the race is just amazing, he was in for a medal. What I do find silly is all this talk of bad luck. Absolon had 'bad luck' with his puncture. He got it on the first lap, so who knows if his tyre set-up was ready for the course but doesn't sound like the others had issues. Burry didn't have 'bad luck' on the startline, he just couldn't make it stick.

Red Zone Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Well done to Burry, 5th place is an awesome result, Super tough course and to hang in there and be in contention pretty much until the end was amazing, shows that he is absolute world class. I think the next few years are going to be very good for our china.
Bos Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Just read some Burry quotes from Tim Whitfield (will post a link when the story goes online). Seems he lost ground at the start because it was fast and physical - "that it is not my strength" but “I don’t think the start made too much difference."“I had a chance but there were ten guys in with a chance of winning this race and the racing was close and hard.“They were just a little bit too good for me today.” I Remember reading a post race interview with Nino after one of the World cups where he mentioned that burry was a slow starter and that he rode like hell out the gate to get rid of Burry. The average world cup race is much more technical than this was so would have been easier to catch up for burry maybe? Burry needs to work on his starts If he said losing 17 odd spots didnt bother him.. It should!?
Underachiever Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 What an AMAZING race!! I was glued to my seat!! MUCH better than track or road racing. Do a bit of MTBking myself and their skill and concentration whilst redlining was incredible to watch. Well done Burry - pity you did not get the medal, but no shame in that at all. Eddy Gordo 1
Tumbleweed Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Here's the link I promised earlier: http://www.iol.co.za/the-star/i-gave-it-my-all-but-they-were-too-good-stander-1.1360769
Eddy Gordo Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Talking of walking, how is it that some of these guys were running down the technical bits, surely at this level that would be a piece of cake? I'm sure I would walked it myself, but still at Olympic level the technical skills should be better. I hate to say it, but I think this has to do with 29ers, we ride some rocky and technical stuff, and one friend has a 29er and he always struggles. Now I know I cant compare the riders, which is not what I want to do, but those wheels are a little bigger maybe a little heavier and after some time in the saddle it does become difficult to pull up on the handles to assist in getting wheels over some obstacles.

Eddy Gordo Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 yes, was talking about the uphill parts where alot of guys ran up

Tumbleweed Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Auto correction, it's a nasty thing. Oops, rock…maybe it was the mention of a "manicured" course playing on my mind…
kosmonooit Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Burry needs to work on his starts If he said losing 17 odd spots didnt bother him.. It should!? Yes it seems so, because its not the first time. Then he has to go into the red to get back to the leading group and inevitably pays the price. But he has shown that if he is up front, he stays up front, barring bad luck. I can't get over the Kulhavi dong what he did. Why in all the WC races this year has he not been a contender, and his last showing in Windham was pathetic, he just disappeared. Burry coming 5th was an immense achievement, we can be proud.
NotSoBigBen Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 burry stander @africanmtbkid packing up and heading home. 4 weeks to world champs in austria. gota find my "start" speed. but first my legs :-)
