So gents, today I trashed the RD on my MonsterX bike sadly. Will a 9speed MTB RD work with the 9sp road shifters? I have been told that this setup is used on some tandems ......

Ten speed road shifters only work with 9 speed Mtb rear derailer.  I don't know about the 9 speed road shifters?  Maybe try a 8 speed rear derailer?

I have an XT 9SP will test it later :)

Bonus would be being able to run a wider range cassette?

if you combine a 9 speed rear derailleur with 10 speed shifters do you still get 10 speed?

So yes a 9sp MTB rd does work with 9sp road shifters [emoji3]

Glad you could confirm this

Pity I only saw this now! I wouldn't have bought sram shifters

Eish bro we told you about the shimano compatibility. But sram is still cool.

This might be a stupid question, but have to ask.

I have read elsewhere on this thread about using a smaller mtb frame?

I have no desire to buy a road bike but have an XL XTC frame that I want to build up for a commuter and maybe slap some slicks on for the odd tar excursion.

I'm on the cusp of a L and XL frame on the mtb, so will the XL not work?

Asking as a complete novice.
