To the road cyclist in Durbanville at 5am this morning....

Wish the school kids cycling to school would also have lights AND wear helmets! There are quite a few Primary School boys I see everyday jumping on and off the sidewalks with their Merida's , but NO HELMETS!!!! Surely if you can buy a 12 year old an expensive bike, you can afford a helmet!

Yes , agree, when I was at school in the 70's and 80's the traffic cops used to come to our schools and tell us how to ride on the roads, the way the school kids(some not all) ride today , I don't think that still happens.

I would tend to agree. The lights are very cheap on EBay. All the exact same stuff we buy in the local shops. If you want a warrantee, then buy two and put one in the cupboard.

Stuff is half to one third of the prices here on the Hub, that includes postage.

He didnt perhaps ride on a black Focus bike?

Sorry was too misty to really note the make and was to busy watching him while he swerved around that he didn't fall and me go over him!

Well.....

I thought it would be a great initiative to get a couple of lights out there one morning and hand them out as they ride past. Will be very nice to see the masses visible!

Great idea!!

Unfortunately the benefit will only last as long as the batteries.

i train at 5 in the am and our group is lit up like a small city. some guys just don't get it.

Lighting up is a matter of survival, even in bright conditions. I wish every road cyclist will just do it! Methinks, our road deaths will reduce if we ride with flasing lights at all times! (My 2c)

All road users (inc cars) should have their lights on all the time, day or night. It can only be for the better!

+1 I use my lights during the day as well, what hellps a lot is the front light, when you approach and a car want to turn across your path they can see you.

Its absolutely idiotic. Last week we rode the memorial for oom Roux, but some are obviously suicidal from the get go. If we want to have rode safety campaigns and telling motorist to beware and respect us roadies, we should at least do our part as well.

It was foggy or misty, whatever you call it on Bottelary Rd this AM - i would guess 1 in 5 cyclists had a good and effective light at the rear.

Some people just don't think. And Wearing all black is a no-no imo.

Fraid I'm guilty of that, most of my winter gear is dark. Albeit with reflective striping. Other than that though I'll wear a bright helmet and light up properly, won't do an AM/dark ride without strobe lights.
