Shocking. Something that cosumers will take into consideration when deciding on a new brand to buy.

 

Rubbish, he got ripped for a service, not much to do whether Scott, Giant or any other Taiwanese made bike. He asked major service, got major bill...no more to it...

I had a R1800.00 service before the Sani, so was super miff with all the mud..

managed to service my BB30 bearings and my Freehub bearings and all good as new, the bearings were totally seized after the race.. you don’t always need to replace the bearings, a good clean out in Paraffin and some new grease and the bearings can be running smooth again.. best thing is to learn to do everything yourself..

I get a major service with Philip Buys mechanic once a year just to ensure i haven’t destroyed anything and the rest of the time i don’t it all myself..

I know it is a bit late but for R3200 you could probably have bought a toolkit, workstand and a Parktool Big Blue Book and still had change for beer.

 

Edit: And bearings and seals from your local engineering supplier. (Depending on the bearings of course)

Lower headset and rear hub bearings, new chain, cables and housings,1 set of brake pads.

 

My bike had not had any of this done in over a year and whilst good enough for the race, after day 3 of the Adventure, it made sense to replace all and have my bike good for another year.

 

The labour component was reasonable and the pricing of the components fair.

 

All in all it cost some money but good value in my opinion. Not sure I could have done as good a job for the cost of the labour.

Any guesses what my service is going to cost?

Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 29er Carbon Expert with Fox Talas (CTD) Fork, Fox with Brain (asked for both to have serviced)

BB service / replacement

Brake bleed

Check headset and hubs

Replace gear cables

Check cassette (should be fine as shifting is fine with new chain on)

Put on new rubber (Purgatory / Ground Control combo)

I replaced the chain and brake pads after 1800km since buying the bike end of Feb. For me to do all this myself would probably have taken me at least 5 hours and I would have needed to buy the components as well, so if the labour component is less than R2500 it would be better for me to let the pro's do it. 5 hours of my time is worth more than that. At least I am not voiding any warrantees this way and I have piece of mind that my bike had a thorough look-over before BC Bike Race at the end of the month.

Besides, it gives me the time to talk shop with the owner and I get to drink his coffee and chat to some of the regulars.

I will let you know when I get my bike back,,,,,,broken axle,cassette , rear lock out shock getting swooped out (factory recall) and and and ,,,,honestly I don't want to know

my chainring looks like an ninja star..but its still going like a boeing..so no need to service anything. I have a full drivetrain sitting in my spares cupboard that i have bought over time that will be replaced by moi when the time arrives

I suppose its relative if you spent R20000 or something on your bike then spending big bucks on it isn't so way out if however your bike is a little less pricey like 4 or 5 grand then spending 3 or 4 grand servicing it is probably not so wise... you could sell your bike take the money you would have spent on the service and bought a brand spanking new bike... my 2cents

Did my 100 hour "maintenance" service on a fox shox and a RS reba for R1000 wish i had the tools to service them at home.

 

From what I have experienced the 100hr service interval is a gimmick, clean your shock and fork stanchions spotless after every ride and monitor how the shock feels and looks. When things stop performing quite like they should get a major service done, maybe sooner rather than later if you ride in extreme dust or mud too often. In the meantime minor services are quite easy and don't need any special tools and the Service kits aren't to expensive. Just google your fork/shock model and find the info on the minor service , always some helpful person breaking it down step by step with pictures.

Look, I'm rather new to cycling and am still learning. That said - I'm definately moving towards servicing my own bike.

I had this particular bike for almost 18 months and felt it required a proper service. I'm not really in the name and shame game - does it really matter what bike it was, save to say it's a dual suspension 30K value. At least it rides like a charm now - I can most certainly feel the difference. Reason for posting this bill is that i think other newbies should not fall into the same pit and wanted to hear what others' experiences were. Yes, I know I f--ked up - I learn and move on from experiences like these - self service and no loyalty to any bike shop.... best price wins.

You see, when you mention the word major, the guy immediately thinks, die ou se pap is f0&&!n duk.

Cant agree more, be specific when you want something done...service fork, bleed brakes and install new BB....Leave the major / minor talk. You will always be disappointed and leaves to much room for a misunderstanding.
