Skip the Christmas pudding :whistling: :whistling:

There's a section about nutrition.

Basically, ride more and eat less.

next year I'm holding onto your pocket racing snake... although... they might seed you at least two batches earlier than me

Gels are ideal because fluids are more readily digested compared to solid foods and they deliver a concentrated dose of energy. So the science behind it is sound but the marketings claims are on another level.

Interestingly the humble potato is so easily overlooked and forgotten.

Boil up a few small baby potatoes, skin on, salt them and loosly wrap them in tin foil. take one each hour on the hour. suppliment with a gel every 90mins, and drink every 20 mins. great sustained energy throughout your event, no matter how long.

cramps are generally a result of lack of training, and the bodies way of saying you have pushed too hard for the training you have done.

Ashleigh did win because she started in the racing elite women category. This is the group where the overall ladies winner is taken from.

Other races have the same outcome with some women getting faster times than the racing women.

elite ladies is very different tactically with lots of attacks and periods of pretty intense intervals. Those that are getting faster times should go and race with the elite ladies, it will be good for the sport.

Interestingly, I think at least a few of the ladies in D with faster times are elities. At the start a couple of the girls were complaining that they did not make the elite group and were placed in D as this is the first seeded group the ladies may enter. Girls were strong - left me for dead turning off the M1.

Next year will be interesting as it will be held at a new venue.

It was nice that this year everything was exactly the same as last year.

You have no need to worry though, I'll drop back :whistling:

Like you said, the A bunch isn't what it used to be

I went past that guy on the bmx, exchanged a few words, seemed like a pretty laid back fellow, smiling all the way.

That's Ryan, he's an awesome guy, him & his Mrs actually got married on the 17th Nov as well, a SunRise wedding.

He is part of the CHOC COWS. Last year he rode from Cape Town to JHB on a BMX with 94.7 being his final leg, unbelievable stories of the ride.

His old man had a heart attack while riding, dad got sent up to JHB etc with him, he went back down to where he was to finish his journey, having lost days and wanting to get back to his dad, he rode huge days of 100km+, his last day to JHB was 220km, all this on a BMX.

Yup, he also did the 55km MTB ride the week before on a BMX.

Yip, the girls in the front of D were super strong, they finished strong with the front of D, unlike myself who had absolutely nothing left for that last little climb... :cursing:

. oops

Sounds about right. They are pretty strict with the elite bunches. Although no one can actually tell me what all the requirements are - the one thing I was told when I asked about riding in vet ladies was a sub 3 is a must. So could be a previous race time or perhaps the bunch was full.

I think it worked like that with the men too some years ago. A certain number of elites were allowed in the elite bunch and the balanced got thrown in A. Which made the regular A bunch riders upset as there's a nice prize for A bunch at 94.7. It might also be this reason why women are not allowed in A-C.

Of course I could be wrong.

The only reason i wanted to ride with the vet ladies was an earlier start. I have never had grand illusions of being able to stay with them to the end. One of the only races I did in the ladies bunch was THE hardest race I've done.

His dad lives just down the road from us, he has always been a strong rider, saw him soon after the heart attack walking to keep fit.

On my second lap , I came across this brave team. A decent "boom" box and the buddy with the batteries !

Nice tunes , made many smile !

Well Done !

yeh, passed them on the N14 after starting at 09:33, still all smiles and pumping really good tunes, think that music was so hard the sound waves must have pushed them along as well

Inspirational story indeed

Think I should seriously get waaayyyy fitter than I am now, and race the one lap next year and chill and get in more of this awesome race spirit on the 2nd lap...I love it. Rode alongside a CHOC COW guy in a pink suit methinks for a while, he did a very good job of convincing me to join!

Btw Clinton, your route suggestions to my wife's office next to the Baron was spot on and virtually no traffic, thanks a million

Don't know if it's been mentioned (not going to scan 100+ pages) I tried to follow the live race on tv. Besides poor picture quality on a clear day, the commentating was killing me. Robyn de Groot brought some new info on the ladies race, but that Harding fellow is not cut out to be a live commentator.

Asked to comment on the ladies event happening in front of him on the screen, captain obvious continued to hammer on the men's results, quoting their times by the millisecond.

They are extremely strict - there were a few top Triathletes and one extremely good Ironman athlete who didn't make it into the Ladies elite group. I suppose though that rules are rules - if you want to get into the Elite group then you need to do the qualifying races....

I really ride for the 2nd lap. The race and go home doesn't paint a true picture of what is happening out there. Go see the people suffering in the heat, enjoy the vibe of JHB, dance on a stage.

The pink people are the Zach Foundation, the money they raise goes into Paediatric Cancer research. Guy on the IC bike was David, his wife rode it last year.

There are perks of being a COW, yes we work hard to fund raise but we also had i think 3 of our own water points, UTI had a beer tent on route for us, we stopped in @ Steers (on the N14) for burgers

Directions - no worries dude, someday you'll pay it forward and help another person out
