The main road in Lakeside is closed to traffic. A cyclist has been hit and all I can see are crumpled bicycle wheels and emergency vehicles. I was just beginning to think I would start training on my road bike again.

Terrible road to ride. Too narrow, too busy, too many hurried and frustrated motorists, too many buses & trucks. :cursing:

Hope the rider is OK

Hopefully not too bad when I went back an hour later the road was cleared. All that is left is glass and sand over oil with white spray paint showing were the car was. No body bag at least.

Did you expect that now that it has been passed into law that all of a sudden motorists would immediately start to comply?

Law in this country is merely a guideline as to what should and shouldn't be done.

There's no enforcement, it all sits behind a camera or at KFC... Then this time of year collecting krismuss bonus

naa, just seen all the cops gather here at my work, apparently for some parade!!! They wereout in full force, all the different units etc. What I dont get is that this country cannot afford this kind of money being wasted, but yet it happens!!

At this stage, I think about 0.001% of road users are even aware of this law. I wasn't, until I just so happened to see the post here...

This is not going to change anytime soon, unfortunately.

The 1m law is an easy way for the DA to tell cyclists "we care about you", assuming cyclists are dumb enough to believe that the law will make a difference to their safety.

That road again? There have been so many accidents down there, I have seen the results of at least four between lakeside and Muizenberg in the last few months alone. And I dont even drive down there very often.

Wonder how many people now even know it's law?

I'm sure if I asked my mom or dad (who isn't really into cycling) they would not even remotely be aware of this...

At least someone in the GUVAMANT is trying to do something for cyclist safety on a whole.... one day it will work out... (Insert Optimistic Smiley here)

I am pretty sure it was the headline in both the Cape Times and Argus yesterday.

Fair enough point.

But what percentage of the population either can or will read the papers?

And then how many of them will take a blind bit of notice?

I went passed that this morning. Don't want to speak too soon/jump to conclusions.

BUT I think it was a motorcyclist collision with a cyclist.

So I suppose this law is useless . Write a letter and ask them to scap it now !! Why do they even bother or try with these laws that will never work ? Kinda sheet attitude I got ?
