Another 2 bottles of peppadews pickled...

4 bushes have given me enough to do 6 bottles so far and there are loads left. Enough still ripening to do another 4-6 jars.

At R30 a jar its quite a saving and its a pretty easy recipe to follow for the pickling:

http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine/season-taste/pickled-pepper-peppadew-recipe-south-africa_35485.html

If you are good in the kitchen you will adapt this recipe to suit your tastes, I chop up and add in a couple of chillis to my syrup before straining it and I like quite a strong ginger taste so I add in more grated ginger.

They are great on home made pizzas, cheese and tomatoe toasties and they add some colour to a dish...!

Is that a fact? My tomato leaves get wet daily with my system

I water early in the morning and if needed in summer, a quick spray in the afternoon so the plants can dry before evening sets in and the dodgy bugs come out!

ok - thats kind of what I do...my system allows for the bed above to drip down onto the tomato's ..but i have since installed shade cloth so might not need the afternoon spray...

I also read in the A-Z veg gardening book mentioned earlier, that they don't like water on their leaves.

Its true.. summer heat + moisture equals allsorts of issues with mildews, blights, rust and all the other fungi. Rather water by drip irrigation, or plant in a furrow and flood irrigate. Ive chosen to stick with an heirloom cherry tomato that is extremely hardy I dont ever have to spray. Ive gone organic, so spraying with fungicide is not an option. Anyone looking for where to find heirloom veg seed, give me a pm

@grebs. hope there are going to be pictures!

Just an update from my vertical garden. Got the first tomatoes coming through, but the lettuce is getting scortched. I am going to rign up some shadecloth this weekend

Roger that! Just busy clearing at the moment. Amazing how much cr@p you can collect in 12 years when you can't see the area that the junk is being stored..... Out of sight, out of mind....

Did 3 loads to the dump with a trailer last weekend. Will do another load to the scrap metal dealer this weekend and one more trip to the dump for the dregs then it is bed and soil prep time.

Need to build up an enclosure around it as well to monkey proof it.

Pictures to follow once the "building" begins.

reading this thread is making me itchy to start a garden. I have a perfect spot for it next to our place. Gets lots of afternoon sun and I could easily make it about 3m x 2m big

Me too, but from past experience I know for a fact that I will just screw it up and waste a lot of money. I just don't have green fingers. In fact, I have anti-green fingers. And toes.

So i almost got my patch of land cleared...

I would like to start small...

First thing... which veggies will monkeys not eat? We have millions of the buggers around... and I dont want to go on planting and they chow everything!

Beetroot? Spinach?

Seriously, monkeys are impossible, they will rip out every plant and just nibble each one! plastic snakes dont work, tried that when we lived in pmb. They will even tear your shadecloth if you build a green house.....maybe try an aviary-like structure with chicken wire. Option B is grow lights in your garage!

Mixed lettuce, mangetout and "bright lights" spinach. I grow them on this stand otherwise the chooks will shred the lot.

The white plastic is a 2l milk bottle used as a funnel to water into the resevoir at the bottom of the pot. Only need to water once a week.
