when your tomato gets bigger the "clever" people say don't get the leaves wet

What about when it rains?

Iv heard that on tomato you must remove the little stem that starts to grow out the "V" of the stems as it will never produce anything.

  • Never water tomatoes from overhead. Overhead watering leaves water on the leaves and splashes soil onto the plant, which provides a ready breeding ground for fungal and bacterial diseases that live in the dirt. Nothing is as heartbreaking as watching a formerly beautiful plant wilt or succumb to a fungal disease. Good tomato hygiene (clean, dry plants, with lots of air flow between them) goes a long ways to preventing disease problems.

  • To prune or not to prune? That is the question. As tomato vines grow, smaller branches emerge from the junction between the leaf stems and the main stem. Many gardeners (and the commercial growers) pinch these off and prune the plants down to one or two main stems. Other people let them run wild. Both pruned and unpruned tomatoes will bear fruit, but pruned plants will yield fewer and larger fruit, while unpruned plants will yield greater numbers of smaller fruit.

Hey guys. Have any of you got an idea how I can controll or eliminate termites in my veggie patch? Preferably without chemicals.

Mint is supposed to keep ants away, so I suppose it should work for termites.

Borax, mezina and castor sugar mixture also works for ants

we've had some rain this week so hopefully the plants can recover from the damage caused by the wind plaguing us the last month or so.

This used to be my compost heap (got some drums now). Not enough heat so everything started sprouting (potatoes, tomatoes and some form of squash)

gotcha.

this little bugger has been tunneling away in my planting beds, to the extent that most of the seedlings I planted has fallen over and died.

Watering the garden this morning I saw him pushing a tunnel, called the Jack Russel and the rest is history.

What is your daily rate for jack russel hire?

Or do you charge on a per mole basis?

We started a small veggie garden with spinach, rocket, potatoes, basil, thyme, rosemary, parsley and tomatoes. Its coming along nicely and since about 8 weeks in we have been harvesting regularly )at least twice a week). I'm thinking of expanding a bit. Any suggestions for my not-so-green fingers?

what you plant mainly depends on what you want to eat, but my 2c

beans, easy to get going and not very fussy and will provide lots.

carrots require some space but also not very fussy.
