Im planting some lettuce and spinach today. I made a bed out of some old pallets, about 50cm x 20cm. How much of which can I plant in there and what spacing would be needed? also how deep should the container be?

This weekend I tried my hand at building beds. I'm quite happy with the outcome.

Next, I'll like to square foot gardening. Have any of you got experience with that? How deep do the containers need to be?

Planting depth would be half of your current picture on the left.

I had great fun with the concept, pak choy, carrots, beets, spring onions, baby cabbage all came out fantastically. Was seriously oversupplied with pak choy, it all ripened at the same time. The lettuce and spinach flouriched in the environment.

You should try and stick to 1m x 1m boxes, easier to reach everything and you can duplicate seedlings to ensure you achieve some success.

Far side of a box is always good for a tomoatoe trellis so it doesn't block out the sun for other veg.

I loved the concept, it worked well but you have to be savvy with what you pair with

never posted pictures...

build your box about 300mm high, place on the ground, make sure to remove grass if any.

I filled my boxes with about 200mm compost from my garden and the rest a mixture of potting soil and horse poop. Watered the surface well and let it rest for a week, then transplanted seedlings and sowed seeds.

My planting conditions turned out to be optimum and I had sprouts of most seeds within 5-7 days. Just a luck really.

Edit: I tried garlic, garlic tried me, I now think of planting garlic like I think of golf...great waste of time

Why do you want boxes?

If you have the ground area to plant them in then go for it man.

i've got ground area, but also have concrete where most of the boxes will be situated on... short term i could plant it yes, but long term not gonna work

Thing is as nice as those wooden boxes are eventually they just give way to the weight of sand and water. Plastic boxes again get too warm for some veg.

I had some bricks from some old bricks from some building alterations. Chopped off some cement and used it to make about a 13m x 600mm box, which is also about 600 high.

My patch is coming along nicely, however watering has got a little tricky.  Since I took this photo the silly dove has laid another egg and turned broody. :)   Now we wait and see.  In the meantime I'm getting great biceps workouts carrying the watering can.

I water my patch with water collected for the shower and bath.

Must be a new age Dove that doesn't nest in a tree ;)

Pumpkin, gem and butternut are up and growing.

As for the rest of the veggie patch..... the dogs had a ball digging it up for me.
