Hi Hubbers,

What is your average speed when commuting?

I did a 20km round trip over the weekend which took me about 1hr and 45mins.

Just keen to know what is considered normal travel time.

Cheers

Gary

I travel 10km's (One way), takes me 25-30mins going to work, 35-40mins going home. Going home is almost all uphill. Speed is between 18-38km/h

Average of 11km/h? That is ok'ish if you're just starting out, also if the area is really hilly, also perhaps if the wind was pummeling you, maybe you were doing all off road rather than tar?

Too many variables to really say if it was a good speed or not.

It depends..

Road... In traffic? With a mountain bike on road off road.

You have to be more specific.

Mtb on road no stops... At about 32km per hour. Fairly flat.

Off-road.. Ave drops to about 27

On my road bike it's faster.

Havent ridden a bicycle in over 10yrs, got on the bike on saturday and that's what I did.

Using a mountain bike, 70% off road and 30% on the tar.

Takes me about 45 minutes to an hour for a 23km one way trip on my MTB. Faster on the road bike.

Depending on the wind.....And the traffic lights.

I avg between 25 - 28 km/h. Route varies between 24 to 45 km. Depends how early I get on the bike. I have a short route of about 10 km straight to work but avoid it in the mornings. The afternoon I have a 12 km route back home which on average takes me about 23 min to get home.

It's not really viable at all to compare ave. speeds between people who are all on different routes. Way too many variables.

When visiting family in JHB I might cruise around at average speed of 30 km/h over a 70+ km ride. But here in Westville, going to work in the mornings (which is where most of the climbing happens) I might break myself to reach 22 km/h for my 17km commute. But you see, I have to get over a lot of humps with 15 - 18% gradients on the way...

You can only ask this question of others who do the same route that you do.

I commute by mtb off road. I stay off road to avoid cars, (pedestrians are more understanding). I stop at all the stop streets or when crossing over the streets, and theres lots of streets to cross so i stop a lot. Theres lots of uphill (both ways) and the downhills are filled with stops, there is only one downhill that is long and am able to get to speeds of 50km/h, and that is at the beginning of my morning commute to work. Route distance varies between 16km(straight) to 28km(longer route with some nice single track). Average speed varies between 14km/h to 18km/h, all depends how I feel, how much I have slept, etc.

I remember someone once said, "a commute is not a training ride"
